Football Thursday August 1st practice report

Offense (Joey):
-Much better day for the offense than yesterday, Richie Hoskins confirmed that. They did better with the heat than they had previously and seemed to move the ball significantly better, particularly through the air.

-Wasn't a consensus but I thought Nate Johnson looked the best of the QBs today. Pavia or Dickey probably has the best processing ability of the four in my estimation, but I do think Johnson is the most talented. He really looks the part. Dickey seemed to struggle with accuracy but had the right ideas, Berlowitz made some nice throws but I thought he held on to it too long at times. Pavia was fine but not extraordinary, better than yesterday.

-Did think there were some miscommunications at times between quarterbacks and receivers, particularly early on in practice.

-Loic Fouonji seemed to make a lot of plays over the course of the day. He looks the part and can really high point some balls. Skinner was also good, seems like he's improved. Tristen Brown was one of my standouts on the day, really good showing while he was utilized a few different ways. Sherrill was ok but not impressive and I didn't see much from any of the other receivers.

-Witt Edwards made some catches but could use some weight, needs a good bit of weight if they want to move him to TE.

-Offensive line struggled a bit but was good enough for them to keep it moving through the air. They've got a lot of different combos they seem to be toying with.

-Think Misael Sandoval could play this year. He's really built out and seems to be mobile.

-Cole Spence had a good day, the best of the tight ends and maybe the best of any weapon. He's gonna be a go-to guy around the end zone. Quiet for Eli Stowers from what I saw.

Standouts from today:
- TE Cole Spence
- QB Nate Johnson
- WR- Loic Fouonji
- WR Tristen Brown

Defense (Billy):
-Offense won the day, but I wouldn’t say the defense played poorly

-There wasn’t as much of a pass rush on the quarterbacks, but that’s also hard to gauge since they’re not in full pads yet

-It looked like Tim Beck/Jerry Kill had their way with the defense at times. Some of the stuff they ran had the defense lost on certain plays

-Safeties are vocal. CJ Taylor, Marlen Sewell, and Steven Sannieniola are the ones that stand out

-There are a few defensive lineman that talk a lot in between plays: Darren Agu, Zaylin Wood, and Khordae Sydnor - feels as if they’re playing with more of an edge than I’ve seen.

-After practice, Tyson Russell mentioned that Clark Lea puts “emphasis on a lot of details” and that “he’ll clean up a lot of mistakes we’ve had in the past.”

Standouts:
- S Marlen Sewell
-S De’Rickey Wright
- LB Bryan Longwell
-LB Langston Patterson

Special Teams:
-Brock Taylor hit what looked to be a 50-yard field goal.

Southeastern 16 - Vandy Pod

I generally like the stuff @Chris Lee & Southeastern 16 put out… but thought the analysis of Vandy on this one was pretty lazy.

They wrote Clark Lea off as fired. Talked about all the transfer departures & didn’t really talk about any of the additions. And when they debated Lea’s replacements off at the end, said we should hire Coach Prime, which, like come on… I’ve got a better chance at being Vandy’s next HC than Prime.

Case Study: US Men's Basketball Team

First, let me say that I’m not comparing our basketball team to the US team. And my apologies if this all been discussed in a previous thread.

The US Men’s Basketball team shows the difficulty of playing 12 players in a 40 minute game. Assuming that Bilal doesn’t play often, that leaves 12 players. Each of the remaining 12 players have support from members of the fanbase. (e.g. some people think Huffman should be a significant part of the rotation, some think JQ should get to play, etc.) The coaching staff has to manage egos and keep the players engaged.

Through 2 games, here’s what we’ve seen:

3 DNPs. The highest MPG is 24.

Obviously there’s not a direct correlation between the two rosters. But it provides visualization for potential options. If Hoggard and Edwards each play 28 minutes a game, for example, you can place them in the Lebron and Booker spots above and ask “where do those 8 extra minutes come from”.

Do you try to play all 12 guys but sit a few each game? Can you keep guys who have huge minutes in the past happy by playing them 15-18 mpg? Do you just go with a 10 man rotation? If two guys are left without a chair, how to you manage those egos and keep the locker room united?

I am not accustomed to having 12 guys on a roster that you will feel comfortable playing. I find it oddly stressful.

Off topic What on earth is going on in Athens, GA?

Kirby Smart needs to do something to fix his culture with his team and do it quickly. The legal incidents with his players are out of control. He’s got players who drive recklessly AFTER a player and staffer died in a drag racing incident and now someone accused of cruelty to children, yikes. He needs a Jack Easterby of sorts to come in and fix things (Easterby was brought in by the Pats after the whole Hernandez disaster)

Football 7/31 Fall Practice Report

- Stiner showed much more energy than Hourigan in the stretching period to begin practice

- Jerry Kill's voice was heard, mostly from the offensive line and from players who weren't hustling. You can hear his voice after just about every offensive play. He's extremely involved on the offensive side and has seemed to instill more competitiveness in that unit as a whole

- Overall, the quarterbacks weren't overly impressive, but improved as practice progressed. They were noticeably more vocal getting to the line and worked with much more pace and urgency than last season

- The chemistry between QB-WR felt a little off, but it is the first day of fall camp

- There wasn't a receiver that necessarily stood out, but Founji and Wiley certainly looked the part

- Jesse Mirco looked great punting, but I didn't see any place kicking

- Clark declined to comment on the status of CB Marlon Jones and RB Makhilyn Young

- DE Darren Agu looks noticeably bigger, and so does Yilanan Outarra

- Dontae Carter was flying around and always around the ball. After practice, Marlen Sewell called him "a playmaker."

- There was more trash talk back and forth than I expected, and a couple of instances of pushing and shoving after plays

- The offensive line looked objectively better than the spring

- New additions like Steven Hubbard and Chase Mitchell have already made a difference

- Quincy Skinner called Diego Pavia "a baller, a dawg."

Standouts from today:
- TE Eli Stowers (big, physical target - he's the real deal)
- CB Tyson Russell
- CB Taco Wright
- S CJ Taylor

Feel free to ask any questions and I'll do my best to answer them.

Why can't we replicate MIzzou?

Here's an AD not so stratospherically different than Vanderbilt. An NIL fund that I assume is on par, with Vandy maybe having more NIL upside.

They've gone 5-7 to 6-6 to 11-2, mostly using NIL and the portal to plug team weaknesses. Recruiting class rankings in the 25 to 35 range.

This year they are a CFP pick. Why can't we replicate that success or surpass it?

Admission standards? its my understanding they are playing a bit more ball there. Facilities? doesn't seem to be an extraordinary gap there. Interested in peoples thoughts.

I'd watch London Jemison and Omari Witherspoon as guys they could be factors for. Witherspoon cuts his list today.

2025 big man Jayden Leverett could be a guy who gets an offer soon.
