So many people are saying Vanderbilt “copied” Tennessee with tearing down the goalpost and throwing it in the in the river after beating Alabama. That is a lazy analysis. Vanderbilt didn’t copy them, they one-upped them. They outdid them. Vandy’s version of beating Alabama was superior. Copying implies lesser, inferior, etc. By any way you cut it, Vanderbilt’s win and celebration surpass Tennessee’s. Anything Tennessee did then, Vandy did better.
Game stats:
We beat #1 bama as an unranked 2-2 team
They beat #3 bama as a #6 5-0 team
We beat bama by 5 as 22.5 point underdogs
They beat bama by 3 as 8.5 point underdogs
We beat Alabama decisively and always had the lead. We won that game.
They won on a last second long field goal in a flukey game with lots of lead changes. Bama lost it.
The celebration:
Our fans tore down the goalpost and marched it nearly 3 miles, through crowds, over cars, in the thick of Broadway, to throw it in the river. We had a police escort.
Their fans went 50 yards and tossed it in the river that their stadium is on.
We played the Saban clip as people stormed the field. Adding insult to injury to bama.
TN did zero trolling during their field storming.
This isn’t copying. You don’t say you copied your neighbor because they bought a new BMW and then later you go out and by a new Lambo. We just did it better.
Tennessee fans just can’t swallow the pill that their best and biggest win in the 21st century is outdone by Vanderbilt a few years later.
End of rant.
