Injury Report

I’m sure most of these guys should be good to go, but this may explain why the line is so heavily in UKs favor… this is half our defense. I wish we had ball state this week.

I keep hearing how we “copied” Tennessee

So many people are saying Vanderbilt “copied” Tennessee with tearing down the goalpost and throwing it in the in the river after beating Alabama. That is a lazy analysis. Vanderbilt didn’t copy them, they one-upped them. They outdid them. Vandy’s version of beating Alabama was superior. Copying implies lesser, inferior, etc. By any way you cut it, Vanderbilt’s win and celebration surpass Tennessee’s. Anything Tennessee did then, Vandy did better.

Game stats:
We beat #1 bama as an unranked 2-2 team
They beat #3 bama as a #6 5-0 team

We beat bama by 5 as 22.5 point underdogs
They beat bama by 3 as 8.5 point underdogs

We beat Alabama decisively and always had the lead. We won that game.
They won on a last second long field goal in a flukey game with lots of lead changes. Bama lost it.

The celebration:
Our fans tore down the goalpost and marched it nearly 3 miles, through crowds, over cars, in the thick of Broadway, to throw it in the river. We had a police escort.

Their fans went 50 yards and tossed it in the river that their stadium is on.

We played the Saban clip as people stormed the field. Adding insult to injury to bama.
TN did zero trolling during their field storming.

This isn’t copying. You don’t say you copied your neighbor because they bought a new BMW and then later you go out and by a new Lambo. We just did it better.
Tennessee fans just can’t swallow the pill that their best and biggest win in the 21st century is outdone by Vanderbilt a few years later.

End of rant.

Will you attend any other games this season?

I’m hoping that some of the guys and gals who have been sitting out will make the choice to attend the next 1 or more of the next 4 games.

I know we have many guys on here who used to attend games who have to be considering coming back out to the Bank.

Look at it this way, you didn’t get season tickets and think of the money you saved by doing so. Now consider using that extra money to buy a Texas or South Carolina or UTjr ticket! I think the Ball St game will be ok (win or lose) but with Texas coming to town and a huge fanbase, I would think our tickets will be cheapest now.

Any of you out of towners considering coming in?

Every fan counts. I will say that I felt like we had 6-8k Saturday and we were loud and we supported the team well but it sure would be nice to have an additional 1-5,000 Vandy fans in attendance.

Somehow I’ve gone from apathy, to fired up to apathy, to fired up, to back in my cheerleader role within a 5 week stretch.

Beat UK.

House vs. NCAA (relevant for VU)

Letter from Michigan AD: (presumably similar for VU, except that Michigan has 29 athletic programs & we have significantly fewer programs- ironically a competitive advantage for VU in this scenario)

An Update on House vs. NCAA and
How it Will Impact Michigan Athletics
I want to update all University of Michigan stakeholders regarding developments in the class action lawsuits collectively referred to as House vs. NCAA and how this will impact our athletic programs. On Monday, the US District Court issued a preliminary approval of the settlement agreement between the parties, with final approval scheduled for April 7, 2025.

Once finally approved, this landmark settlement will have a significant impact on Michigan Athletics, our peer Big Ten institutions, and all of collegiate athletics. We plan to continue an approach that was established when Michigan started competing in intercollegiate athletics in 1865: providing championship-level support to each of our NCAA varsity sports. This approach best positions our teams to compete for conference and national championships.

Assuming final approval of the settlement occurs in Spring 2025, the following changes will be implemented starting with the 2025-26 academic year based on the negotiations with the plaintiffs:

  • Institutions will be permitted to compensate student-athletes through revenue sharing, anticipated to be between $22-23 million annually; previously, student-athletes could only earn money through athletic scholarships and NIL funded by entities outside of the University.
  • Additionally, all Division I college athletes who participated on teams in 2016-2021 are eligible for name, image and likeness (NIL) backpay; the court found that these student-athletes were prevented from earning NIL dollars. The parties to the suit have negotiated a settlement that the NCAA will pay nearly $3 billion in damages to those class members.
  • The judge will decide how those back damages will be distributed, and the University of Michigan will have no say in that.
  • The plan to cover the cost calls for the University of Michigan to receive $1.5 million less per year from the NCAA revenue distribution for the next 10 years to cover its portion of those back damages.
  • All NCAA sports now have roster limits, meaning there is a maximum number of individuals who can be on a team’s roster and compete with that team in a given year; previously, this was not the case.
  • Upon final approval Universities can provide as many scholarships as there are roster spots; previously scholarship limits were based on NCAA rules per sport.
Maintaining a high level of support for our 29 NCAA athletic programs will take an elevated commitment from everyone. The anticipated annual payment of $22 million will go directly to the athletes starting with the 2025-26 academic year, with those payments estimated to increase every year to maintain a proportional revenue share. Should our department also decide to meet all the new NCAA scholarship limits for each of our 29 teams, education costs to support those additional student-athletes are expected to increase by $29 million annually. Consequently, the cost to support our budget with new revenue share and scholarship opportunities, will take a combination of generating more revenue and reducing expenses, to cover approximately $50 million in additional dollars each year.

Michigan Athletics has always been a self-sustaining unit of the university. Unlike many athletic departments across the country, we do not receive funds from the state, the university or any student fees. All revenue that the department receives through conference media rights, licensing, ticketing, sponsorships, donations and other sources is used to fund our annual operating budget in order to support our teams throughout the year.

We intend to maximize the revenue sharing opportunities presented by these new policies to support and recognize the NIL contributions of our student-athletes to the full extent allowed by the NCAA and the agreed upon settlement. Their hard work in athletics and commitment to the community and classroom help drive our collective passion for Michigan Athletics. We are continuing to assess the number of additional scholarships that our department will be able to fund, but we are firm in our commitment not to eliminate any sports or reduce the number of scholarships we currently offer.

Accomplishing these goals in today’s college athletics landscape takes all of us. Together, our commitment to embracing these changes, our openness to developing new revenue streams, and our continued responsible stewardship of Michigan Athletics’ assets and finances will ensure our continued success.

There is still a significant need to support the NIL initiatives of our student-athletes. For the foreseeable future, collectives such as Champions Circle will continue to be an important source for our student-athletes’ NIL opportunities. NIL support will continue to play a role in our success, especially through recruitment and retention of student-athletes.

This is a challenging time in higher education and college athletics, but it is also an opportunity to show the world who we are at Michigan. To help secure the long-term success of our athletics programs, we need the support of everyone associated with Michigan Athletics.

I hope that you will continue to make the choice to help us remain the Leaders and Best.

Thank you for your continued support and Go Blue!

Basketball practice thoughts

Got let into practice today for about 30 minutes. Not many live periods but still learned some things. Thanks to Vanderbilt for letting us in.

-The pace of practice is faster than most places I've been. They want to run and are practicing how they want to play. They're always running and moving and cutting. Everyone on the floor can run, pass, dribble and shoot.
-The releases on the shots are much, much quicker than last year.
-They aren't quite there with running their actions and understanding each other offensively from the looks of it. Looks like guys are thinking too much at times, so many of them are new to the scheme. They want to be just doing stuff instinctually eventually but I think it'll take time.
-Jaylen Carey looks like the most impressive player on the team, although most of that was against air. His shot looks pretty.
-They ran a lineup of Devin McGlockton at the four and JaQualon Roberts at the five. Wonder if that could be something that happens often so McGlockton isn't out of position.
-From the looks and sounds of it Roberts has really improved, not sure if they love trotting him out there.
-Jason Edwards isn't gonna move it as much as other guys but he can make tough shots, as expected. Looks like their most explosive scorer.
-Alex Hemenway is still off to the side, not super worried about it.
-MJ Collins, JaQualon Roberts and Jaylen Carey look like their three best athletes.
-They're not really working a whole lot of sets from what I understand. They mostly seem to just want to hammer in concepts.

It's all about Kentucky - Big game for VU

I've been watching some replays of Kentucky games. Defense is impressive. Offense is lost. Their interior Defensive lineman are first rounders. Defense can play with anyone. Our defense seemed to make Georgia State look good. All depends on which version of us comes out to play on Saturday.

- The Kentucky defense is for real.
- Arguably a better defense than Alabama.
- South Carolina Game was a bit of an outlier. South Carolina won 31-6 and only gained 252 yards. Kentcky only had 139 yards and threw 2 interceptions including a pick 6. 4 fumbles but didn't lose any.
- Kentucky offense really struggled the first few games (including against Georgia of course). Former Georgia QB Vandagriff threw for only 30 yards in his first game and was up to 252 in his previous game.

- SEC Rankings: Kentucky has the #3 total defense. Vandy has the #13 total
- SEC Rankings: UK has the #16 scoring offense and Vandy has the #5 scoring offense.
- SEC Rankings: UK is dead last in touchdowns scored and Vandy is 6th.
- SEC Rankings: Vandy is 13th in offensive yards and Kentucky is last.

Are we ready to be the hunted and not the hunter ?

We shall see and over the history of the program the answer has been no except a handful of seasons. Will not bore you with all the games in the past when we were 3-0,4-0 or even 5-0 or seasons we had a big win only to lay an egg the next week. This seasons egg already is the GA State still turns my stomach. I still see this game against UK as VU being an underdog. Hope the team is ready to bring their A GAME ! This is a very good UK team.
