FB Recruiting News and Notes: Sept. 14th

Lanier picked up a new offer from Minnesota last night, so that's something to monitor because other teams will likely get involved. As previously mentioned, Lanier was a guest of Georgia Tech for their opener against Clemson at the Dome along with two other Vandy commits in Martel Hight and Anthony Miles.

Secondary

For those of you at the game on Saturday, I was wondering your thoughts on a few things from the defensive backfield:
-- I bet this got a lot of discussion on the game thread which I didn't read in-game because I didn't want to get my phone wet and didn't have the stomach to go back and read afterward ... BJ Anderson vs. Lucien. It was interesting that one week after playing BJ exclusively at CB an entire game that he yanked him (which he should have) for Lucien and kept it that way. Not sure Lucien looked much better. Who would you start this week?
-- Any thoughts on Tyson Russell? He seems not to show up as much in the burn department.
-- De'Ricky - the last two weeks have reminded me that he's a barely played any football. He is also a bit of a tweener, maybe more of a LB than a DB overall. I haven't been blown away by his coverage skills. I have been impressed how around the football he is at times.
-- CJ Taylor - I'd like to see more of him
-- Mahoney and Worship - solid

I'd like to see some INTs this week.

Football QB and coach thought/question

After listening to Chris and Will's podcast, I had a thought.

Clark Lea is a smart guy, obviously. I'm not trying to question his intelligence at all, but this question/thought does so on its own.

We all knew Mike Wright can't consistently throw accurately. The fans knew it, the staff knew it, opponents knew it. Point being, it's not a new revelation.

So, you go out and recruit two QB's in A.J Swann and Drew Dickey that can throw the ball all over the field, that can make every throw. You have a returning QB in Ken Seals that throws the ball pretty darn well himself when he is healthy. Why go against a passing QB when you have three on your roster that you like, to use one that can't make the throws the other three can?

Ok, I know the short term thought was run the ball with Wright. But, why? Did Lea really think that without the threat of a passing game that he would be able to run the ball against quality teams? You have recruited players that fit a down field passing attack, you have current players that fit a down field passing attack. You know that you can actually (gasp!) run the ball AND pass it. Why make a one dimensional choice when it was unnessecary, and goes against everything you're recruiting for in the future?

I didn't like the decision to start Wright, but hoped that it would work out. It did against the two chumps on the roster, but, we have no more gimme games left.

Now, Lea finds himself in a self made pickle. Do I keep playing Wright, when everyone knows his limitations passing? Do I start Swann, and piss off half of my team because they support Wright? Do I play them both, and neither really gets enough meaningful reps to seperate themselves from the other?

Again, Lea has a dilemma on his hands, one that will be second guessed whichever way he chooses, and he has no one to blame but the guy looking back at him in the mirror every day.

Remembering VU pitcher Mark Hindy, murdered by terrorists on 9/11/2001

We should remember the life of Mark Hindy, a former VU pitcher who lost his life on 9-11-2001.

Mark was working at Cantor-Fitzgerald when he was murdered by terrorists. He was one of nearly 3,000 Americans killed that day. Let us remember all of them.

OT: What are sports cliches that fans use that coaches/players never do?

Someone mentioned “lose the locker room” the other day — which admittedly is a real phenomena but in having both played and coached football it’s just something you’d never hear a coach or player say. Then this morning I saw an open letter from a Nebraska fan saying “Scott, you hated losing more than you liked winning” — again that is such a fan statement. Which got me thinking because I know there are some others that I’m totally missing that are obvious. Anyone have one or more?

SEC Baseball Schedule Unveiled

SEC announces 2023 conference slate

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Southeastern Conference portion of Vanderbilt’s 2023 baseball schedule is set, the league announced Wednesday. Each school will play 10 three-game weekend series.

The 30-game conference slate gets underway March 17–19 when the Commodores will travel to Mississippi State, marking first time since 2019 that Vanderbilt will open conference play on the road.

The Dores will return home for the next two weekends to welcome Georgia (March 24–26) and Ole Miss (March 31–April 2) before facing in-state foe Tennessee on the road (April 7–9).

The series with the Volunteers will be the first of four consecutive weekends against SEC East opponents as Vanderbilt will host South Carolina (April 14–16) before traveling to Missouri (April 21–23). The Commodores will welcome Kentucky (April 28–30) for the final weekend of April.

Vandy will be on the road for two of its final three SEC series, including back-to-back trips to Alabama (May 5–7) and Florida (May 12–14). The Dores will return home to host Arkansas (May 18–20) in the final weekend of the regular season.

The SEC slate is subject to change for television scheduling. The Commodores will release their nonconference schedule at a later date.

Vanderbilt plans to open fall training on Oct. 18. The Commodores’ fall schedule features a pair of exhibitions, including a home matchup against Samford (Oct. 22), and a neutral-site contest against Arizona State in Las Vegas. The team will conclude the fall with the annual Black and Gold Game tentatively scheduled for Nov. 13.

The Commodores welcome 13 newcomers this season, while returning consensus All-American Enrique Bradfield Jr. and a pair of Freshman All-America pitchers in Carter Holton and Devin Futrell.

Audio PODCAST: A must-win game with NIU, plus, Vanderbilt's future at quarterback

Vanderbilt didn't look great in its game with Wake Forest, setting up what Chris Lee and Will Perdue term a "must-win" game with Northern Illinois. Chris and Will discuss that, the Mike Wright/AJ Swann dynamic at quarterback, officiating issues from Saturday and a few humorous anecdotes from Will's life as a student at Vanderbilt.

Football Mike Wright and his confidence

He obviously had a terrible outing against Wake.

Wake took away his running lanes, and made Wright beat them with his arm. He went 8-15, for 35 yards, 1 int and 1 fumble. He got yanked for having a terrible day, and (I heard, didn't see) that he wasn't being a very good teammate after his benching.

So, where is his mindset at? Does he have a good attitude and bounce back? Does he continue sulking and look terrible? Does he man up, have a good attitude, but comes back in and struggles passing again and starts looking over his shoulder at the better passer on the sidelines standing next to Lea?

This game against NIU is big for Vanderbilt, Lea, and Wright. But, Vanderbilt doesn't really care, and Lea is in year 2 of a 10 year cushion. Wright has the most riding on his performance against NIU, does the pressure get to him?

It's should be an interesting game.

Football playing on the road

i tend to think vu often performs better on the road primarily because players can adopt an ‘us against them’ mentality in a hostile environment, which happens to not be their own stadium.
does any team in P5 football have less of a home field advantage than vu ? I certainly can’t name one.

for this reason, vu comes home with a W this weekend.
