Women’s Game Today

19 turnovers in the first half. Not enough bodies, of course. The injuries have had a devastating impact on this team. If the coach can get this group to finish 11th or 12th in the SEC this year that will be an accomplishment. We believe the coach is good but you need players.

Look at UConn with the top player in the country out for the year but they continue to roll along as if nothing happened. Can we get a “break through “ recruit?

Game thread Vanderbilt vs Wofford game thread, 4pm central.

Interesting matchup today for Vanderbilt against a 5-3 Wofford team. Wofford's net would currently make this game a Q3 opportunity for Vandy but they are only eight spots from it becoming a Q2, could eventually turn into that if Wofford can be around the top 5 of the SoCon. Also may not be easy, Wofford lost by just three to LSU last week and had a five-point lead with 3:40 to go in Baton Rouge.

Wofford's offense is similar to a few slower-paced units that Vanderbilt has seen recently. Jay McAuley's team wants to slow it down, they shoot a little under 24 threes per game, and don't turn it over an excessive amount. In ways they're similar to Saint Mary's, although probably not quite as good. Ezra Manjon's defense in particular will be important against Jackson Paveletzke. The 6'3 guard runs the show for Wofford and has been their leading scorer with 16.4 points per game while shooting 58.8% from the field 52.6% from three. Wofford has some other double-digit scorers like B.J Mack and Corey Tripp, but if Vandy can rattle Paveletzke, Wofford will have a tough time in this one. He seems to be the heart and soul of their team, similar to how Ace Baldwin is for VCU. If the Terriers stay in this one it will be because of their offense, they are ranked 60th in offensive efficiency but 278th in defensive efficiency.

That leaves an opportunity for Vandy to really open things up offensively, Wofford has been susceptible to letting up big performances from opposing guards early in the year and has generally been a poor defensive group all season. Especially on the perimeter. Liam Robbins will also have at least 3-4 inches on whoever is guarding him throughout the afternoon, as well. VCU provided plenty of challenges against Vandy's offense, but this will be a get right opportunity for them on that end.

Vandy is a nine point favorite at the moment.

Recent VU Opponent in close battle with #1 Houston

We fell short against St. Mary's by 10 points.

The St. Mary's Gaels have stayed within 3-5 points with #1 Houston (7-0) (playing this in Ft. Worth) all game, and there are less than 4 minutes to go.

Edit: However, as of a minute later, it is looking like St. Mary's is starting to make mistakes at the wrong time as the game runs toward its conclusion; they just blew a possession and let Houston score and get a FT. Hard to say but SM is going to have to have stops if they are to catch up. It's a 6 point game but they need to cut the deficit rather than let it get bigger as it is getting now.

Off topic OT - World Cup question (nerds)

Ok, this has been driving me crazy but I need help.

Is my grammar poor?

Has grammar in America changed?

Or is soccer guy using British grammar?

As it relates to soccer announcers using grammar that doesn’t jive with what I was taught…

“Even though Canada are* mathematically eliminated, they still have plenty to fight for.”

Before the World Cup, I thought it was, “Even though Canada *is eliminated.”

Is this just announcers and commentators appropriating British grammar or has our grammar actually changed and I just missed it?

Option C is I always had it wrong (3.0 student, so that would make sense).

Anybody else noticed this?

“Iran *have to play a more attacking style in the 2nd half.”

Etc…

Nerds, please help.

Football Notre Dame's starting QB enters transfer portal. What the heck?

I will stop posting about every player who enters the transfer, but this one caught my attention. Am I missing something? The starting QB at Notre Dame is transferring? After an 8-2 record as a starter. What in the world is going on? Paging Ron Powlus.

Pete Thamel ESPN

Notre Dame quarterback Drew Pyne intends to enter the NCAA transfer portal and is not planning to play in the team's bowl game, sources told ESPN on Friday. The third-year signal caller will have three years of eligibility at his next destination.

Pyne started 10 games for Notre Dame this season, leading them to an 8-2 record and finishing No. 20 nationally in individual quarterback efficiency. He threw 22 touchdowns, six interceptions and rushed for 108 yards and two more scores, while completing 64.6-percent of his passes on the season.

He had a 4-1 record against Top 25 teams, which was the most wins against Top 25 competition at Notre Dame in the last decade.

Pyne's production at such a high-profile school should create a strong market for his services. Pyne's likely last game at Notre Dame highlighted his efficiency and skill set, as he completed 23-of-26 passes for 318 yards in a 38-27 loss to USC. His decisiveness in the pocket stood out to opposing coaches, as they characterized him as a quick-twitch thrower.

Pyne took over as Notre Dame's starter against Cal on September 17 in the wake of the upset loss to Marshall. He energized the program after it began the season 0-2 and led them on a run of eight wins in nine games.

Pyne is a 6-foot, 205-pound quarterback from New Canaan who is a former ESPN 300 recruit. He chose Notre Dame over a long sheet of offers that included Alabama, Michigan, Oklahoma and Auburn.

Football Give Blazek a raise

I don't know what our status with coordinators are, and Rossomondo was great, too, but Blazek has earned a raise. He took what started the year as one of our biggest problem areas into a position of relative strength, he's won the recruiting battle vs. the portal, and the team seems to have great gel and camaraderie. Since the message boards spend an inordinate amount of time on coaches that should be canned (and I am guilty of that, too), we should throw money at our keepers, and Blazek seems like a real keeper to me.

I’m pretty shocked but there’s been big infusions of cash into the program recently.
