Taking podcast questions for Will Perdue (1 Friday)

The guest line is presented by Michael Kendrick of The Kendrick Group. Michael is a local carpenter and a lifelong Vandy fan. He builds bookshelves, cabinets, picture frames, furniture and made-to-order items, including a display case for my prized Dale Murphy jersey. I have seen Michael’s work and he’s a true craftsman. If you’re in the market for custom woodwork, give Michael a call at 615.830.9458.

Today’s mailbag is sponsored by Sutherland & Belk, a family owned injury law firm. If you or a loved one has been hurt in an accident, give Taylor or Russell a call at 615-846-6200 to see what your rights are and if they can help.

The podcast is presented by Dr. Jody Jones DDS.

What Could have been... just for fun

Saw a tweet about Keonte Kennedy scoring in double figures for 5 straight for Memphis. Got me thinking about all the "what could have been moments" for Vandy the last few years.

The most frustrating thing I can even think of is how much Drew was going to recruit at Vandy. I'll never forget having that top 10 class with Shittu/Garland/Nesmith. So much excitement.

Look at our visits from 2018:
Saddiq Bey (averaging 10+ in NBA for 3rd straight year)
Simi (I know, he was awful)
Garland
Filip Petrusev (stud for Gonzaga)
Romeo Langford (that one still hurts)
Ignas Brazdeikas (short NBA career after a solid career at UMich)
Nesmith

wow. that is some talent. If he just could have found a way to win 3-4 games that year we lost Garland, would be interesting to see how it all played out. (but, we did find out that he just wasn't a great coach)

Now to Stack - imagine having this roster last season:

Scotty Pippen
Rodney Chatman
Dylan Disu
Jordan Wright
Liam Robbins
Kenyon Martin Jr

And if you really wanted to throw in Garland, Shittu, Nesmith... they would have been Sr last year but would be a stretch for those guys to obviously stay for 4 years

We've had some bad luck with injuries the last 5-6 years but we've also lost some big name guys. That's college hoops though. Fun to imagine what could have been

FB Recruiting 2024 ATH Kobe Smith talks first SEC offer

Chattanooga pass rusher Kobe Smith will be at Vanderbilt's junior day next weekend. He received an offer from Vanderbilt yesterday. He camped at Vanderbilt this past summer. Highly productive defensive end with 10 sacks and 13 pressures last season. He's not overly big, but his ability to rush the passer makes him intriguing.

I need 6 tickets for the Ole Miss game

Yes...I do know Bama just beat Vandy by 50...60 points...hell I don't know...it was a freaking blowout. The truth is I wouldn't go if it was just me, but it's not about me. My twin boys (age 4) have asked me at least a dozen times to take them to a basketball game this year. Ole Miss is the only midday SEC game left that Vandy has a decent chance of winning, so here we are. I have a buddy going with me and he also has twin boys the same age as mine. This is all about our kids having a good time together, and we'll have fun watching them have fun.

So, does anyone have tickets they want to unload? I don't need to have six seats together. Something tells me we'll be able to sit just about anywhere we want, so we just need to get in the building.

Please call or text me at 615-319-9067.

Justin: An OT Question RE: Some 2023 In State Guys

@JustinAngel I was going through Austin Peay’s signing day release and saw they signed Courtland Simmons from DA, Marquez Taylor from McKenzie and Jeremiah Collins from Oakland.

I had remembered all 3 guys but Vandy being involved with Simmons and Collins at one point before he committed to Louisville. Thrilled to see them all end up at AP but curious if you had any backstory on these local guys. I would have though Collins and especially Taylor would have ended up signing with a existing FBS program (Peay will not be FBS until 25 at the earliest).

Football More on Priority Registration And A Few Other Things

I have not posted in a long time, but I thought this might be a useful moment to do so. Zack Plyant’s recent tweet reporting that Chancellor Diermeier refused priority registration for student athletes is not correct. It is correct to say that student athletes do NOT currently have access to priority registration. And, as so many have correctly pointed out, this is bad policy and just makes no sense. Any student or group of students that has trouble getting access to the classes they need due to conflicts with University sanctioned activities should be eligible for priority registration. The current rules are a relic from prior times, and are under review. Both the Chancellor and the current AD support priority registration. Happily, we have a new Provost who is herself a tri-athlete and more open-minded on the subject. Don’t expect some big announcement, but I hope that Chris can report in the coming months that a change has happened here.

While I am typing, I wanted to also say that the Vandy United campaign is going well. A $15 million gift was finalized within the last week, and several other 8-figure opportunities are being worked. Of course, gifts of all sizes are welcome and needed, but we will never get to $300 million without a few more of the really big ones.

Works continues on the design of major facility improvements for football and basketball, and the designs also touch baseball….positively. My understanding is that these will be made public once the designs are finalized and approved. In the meantime, major renovation of basketball locker rooms have been approved and there will also be another nice surprise awaiting fans who come to basketball games this Fall/Winter.

There is clearly a lot to do, and I know many will stay skeptical until they see shovels in the ground. And, that is understandable. But, in my lifetime, I have never seen more facility work funded and on the way than now. I cannot wait for the plans to be finalized and shared with all of you and the public at large.

Clark Lea - Jerry Stackhouse comparison

Amazing the difference in two years Clark has made in VU Football in Culture, Competitiveness, Excitement, Hope for Success. We are on the upswing. Conversely, Jerry seems as lost as he did his first year here. And all the metrics of his program are trending down. He’s completely blown what he could have accomplished this year.

Leadership in the Program

I feel like Jerry needs to read some leadership books. Everytime he gets pressure on him he drives the bus over the players, like Mason during the last 18 months of his tenure.

When he wins, it's because of the players. When he loses, it's on him. He needs to read extreme ownership, but that would require humility and self-awareness, we all know he has zero of that in the suit pockets

Audio PODCAST: Alabama 101, Vanderbilt 44

Alabama blasted Vanderbilt, 101-44, with starting guard Tyrin Lawrence sitting on the bench the entire night, and Liam Robbins' much-anticipated return being negated, especially after Robbins and Jordan Wright collided. Coach Jerry Stackhouse, meanwhile, is unhappy with his veterans, but the question everyone is asking after Tuesday his where Stackhouse stands with the school, which just gave him a contract extension this offseason.
