Stack & the SEC

Stacks peer group of SEC basketball programs has only a few mediocre or truly "bad" coaches- and even most of those coaches - considered to be on the real hot seat - have excellent track records of success in college basketball.

He's simply outworked, out-recruited and outlearned by the majority of his peer group. It's not new. There are only a very few programs in SEC that you can say has a worse trajectory than Vanderbilt right now.

If you haven't figured what it takes to win consistently in the SEC in FOUR years, you're simply not going to get it.

The work it takes to get to a non-mediocre level is beyond what Stack is willing to put in, IMO. I'd love to be wrong, but this was evident by year 2. He's a smart guy - but it takes WAY more than that. Think about all the previously uber-successful coaches who fail once they get in the SEC.

I don't think it was ever supposed to come to this when Turner hired him - but we're here now - and the sooner we move on, the better upward trajectory we'll see. If we go north of 7-11 this year or even 9-9 next year, I'll come back and eat crow.

Why?

One question I have been asking myself is why do we not have better talent in the 4th year of Stack’s tenure?

Some say it’s because he plays too much golf or doesn’t care. I don’t buy that. He wants to win as much as anybody.

I think ultimately his downfall from assembling anything better than bottom half SEC talent is he doesn’t have stud recruiters/strong assistants. Yes, we may win the quantity (I can’t even tell you how many people are on our staff) battle but not on quality. Is this because Stack doesn’t want strong personalities around?? I don’t know.

But I seriously seriously doubt that if stack gets fired that our top two assistants will be picked up by better programs in the first 48 hours like happened when Bryce got fired. (Jake D- OH State, RP- Gonzaga).

At the end of the day, lack of talent will be Stack’s downfall. The prior staff was in on big time players. We are not. I think the staff is a HUGE reason why.
