FB Recruiting ***OFFICIAL VISIT BOARD/JUNE UPDATES***

An updated chart of Vanderbilt's expected June officials (as of May 30th). We'll pin this to the top and continue to update it throughout the next month as the Commodores look to make some big additions to their 2024 recruiting class.

When should we start talking about football?

Blame it on the B12 but I’m ready to talk football. Who’s coming with me?

Offense

Questions:

1) QB
Can the Oline keep AJ Swann clean? Concussion area is a slight concern with AJ. Plus he’s proven when given time he will hit the open man. He must be protected. At back up it’s the same thing. Seals has shown some things but that was long ago. If he is pressed into action he too must be protected. He’s had injury issues as well. The other two backups we know very little about other than they aren’t ready. Maybe Taylor sees some goalies packages but I don’t see a situation where either start and look very well.

WR

It’s Shep’s world but VU must find two more complimentary receivers who can be relied on to keep teams from doubling Shep every game. McGowan seems like the likely slot guy and when he doesn’t fumble he’s very good there. Ball control is his issue but hoping that’s corrected. At the other boundary WR it’s a toss up between Skinner Jr and Gamarion Carter. Skinner JR has made some great plays and at times looks like he’s the WR we all want him to be. Other times he disappears. Carter has the speed but like Skinner Jr has yet to really start to separate himself as an emerging threat. In addition, we’ve all heard all summer how good Junior Sherrill and Landon Humphries are going to be. Can they push for playing time now? That would really help out Swann and the offense.

RB

I hated to see Ray Davis leave. It seemed like every time VU needed a couple yards Ray got ‘em. He will be missed. If he’s healthy Kentucky got a steal.

With that said, VU must now rely on four really unproven backs to carry what should be a run heavy, clock chewing offense given the defensive liabilities. VU returns two and has three true freshmen fighting for those touches. Will it be running back by committee or will someone separate themselves?

Oline

What a job AJ Blazek has done.

This unit has improved every year. This year should be no different. We finally get to see what guys like Greyson Morgan and Levi Harber can do and the reliable guys from last year like Ashmore and others returning will make this a solid unit. Have some concerns about who starts where how long it takes the group to really get going but this shouldn’t be an area of concern which is really nice.

So (hypothetically) when would we know about Baxter?

I would think Corbin would want to hire a new hitting coach sooner rather than later, especially once teams fill head coaching vacancies and then have to fill a staff.

If we don't hear anything by the time the CWS is over, I think we can assume Baxter Ball will be back next year, which will really diminish my enthusiasm for next season.

Corbin and Transfers

We all know that Corbin does not like the transfer portal nor want to play that game much, but there are some circumstances where he will bring the right person. One area is obviously a grad transfer like Schreck, and it would preferably be someone that he had some experience recruiting as a HS player so he would know how that player would fit with the rest of the team. VU's requirement that a student take their last 60 hours at Vandy in order to graduate prevents Tim from getting an upperclassman as a transfer, he could only take an incoming sophomore or junior who, once again, may have been recruited by Corbin but chose to attend another school. One place where Corbin has had some success in the past with transfers is the JC ranks, so I would not be surprised if a player(s) emerged from junior college that fits the VU profile and can contribute on the field and locker room. Finally, Corbin likely does not yet know what current players may transfer out so he would know what gaps to fill or what signees will make it to campus so this roster will not be set for some time.

Of course, "hold your nose" if you need to, or "suspend reality" if that works for you, but I found this a look into the Wild Wild West of building a basketball team in today's world.
