Football Practice report #5 (08/05)

They went a bit lighter today in anticipation of full pads tomorrow so hard to get a whole lot out of today.

Defense probably won the day.

Offense (Joey):

-I liked what I saw out of the quarterbacks. Thought all of them made some throws. A few interceptions thrown, neither by the New Mexico State transfers. Pavia made some nice ones including a sizeable one to Joseph McVay that I was encouraged by. Probably a better day for Pavia.

-Johnson made some really good ones, but probably didn't leave with a whole lot to show from it. I think Johnson's got a chance to win the thing, he's so gifted. Can he be consistent, though? He's been better in the fall than the spring. The thing I do note is that Pavia is the first one they bring up when we ask about QB and he acts like the leader of the group. He's demanding and vocal. Berlowitz can make all the throws, same with St. Hilare, they're just not quite ready from the looks of it.

-Thought there were a lot of really good throws today that weren't caught. Receivers weren't great. Sherrill made a few good ones but Fouonji didn't have an awesome day. Johnson had a TD throw dropped in the end zone. Not awesome play out of that room today.

-Sedrick Alexander was back live today. Hard to tell the impact the RB's are making without them in full pads. That starts tomorrow.

-Brycen Coleman is becoming a fall camp legend. Every ball that's in the air it seems like he's found a way to come down with. Tight End is a hard position to learn as a freshman and they're deep there so I don't know where he gets on the field. Maybe in some receiver-heavy sets he plays on the perimeter. I like him more on the perimeter than in-line, think they do too.

-Micah Bell was better than he has been today but hasn't done a whole lot throughout camp. May be a guy that comes in just to touch the ball but isn't consistently out there. Tristen Brown I like more, he made a great catch today.

-Lot of scouts watching the offensive line at one point. They've got some guys there I like. Too early for me to project a depth chart I think, especially with Grayson Morgan off to the side today. If I were to wager on Cade McConnell's position I'd say center. I do wonder how Morgan factors in. I've got an idea of what I think the line will be but I'm waiting a few days to confirm it. Thought defensive line was better than offensive line.

-Witt Edwards, Boski Barrett, Grayson Morgan and Dariyan Wiley were off to the side working. No outward signs on any of them but none were live except for Wiley, but he left early.

Offensive standouts:
WR Brycen Coleman
QB Diego Pavia
WR Joseph McVay

DEFENSE (Billy)
  • Unit as a whole looked solid today, the pass rush was active
  • Randon Fontenette was all over the field today and getting after the quarterback consistently – he showed his versatility by getting after the passer and affecting the receivers whether that’s during the route or the catch
  • Langston Patterson made a really impressive one-handed interception
  • Maurice Hampton made a nice play in the endzone and looked solid in the run game
  • Jailen Ruth specifically stood out as well, specifically showing some edge at the end of a couple plays
  • Bryce Cowan also had a solid day, made an impressive interception
  • The defensive line was active, but not dominant – neither line had a decided advantage
  • Khordae Sydnor and Zaylin Wood stood out specifically in the 1-on-1 drills – think both wil play a big factor this season
Standouts:

  • Randon Fontenette
  • Langston Patterson
  • Bryce Cowan
  • Boubacar Diakite
  • Maurice Hampton

Olympic Golf

This might be kind of off topic although I don't know that positive comments about the USA are ever off topic. NBC just showed Scottie Scheffler winning the gold and the awards ceremony. Scottie just in tears. Here is someone who has won numerous Majors and millions of dollars. But this really meant something to him and he is not afraid to say so or to say how good it makes him feel to represent his country. Scottie is truly one of the good guys in pro sports.

Football Thoughts coming out of Sunday's practice

This is the first one I've been able to see due to family responsibilities and so I won't try to overshoot the mark. But anyway, some thoughts:

- Scrimmage situations took place on the far end of the field. The entire team stood between us and the scrimmage, making observations extremely difficult to make (and that's with me watching through binoculars). This is new, in the past, we had a pretty clear line of sight.
- Passing game accuracy has been a concern coming into today and I share some of those concerns.
- That said, I like the design of the offense, I think it works around some of their limitations as best as possible.
- Junior Sherrill, Brycen Coleman and Tristen Brown each made a nice play today in what little I could see. I don't think this is an incredibly gifted WR room so my guess is there will be opportunity for a freshman to play.
- I know Billy had mentioned that RB Sedrick Alexander had been limited last week but from what I saw today, he was out there taking reps and looked like a full-go.
- New Mexico State transfer RB Makhilan Young wasn't out there still. As it was put to me, "he's not here right now" with a mention that school starts in two weeks. I guess we'll wait and see what that means.
- De'Rickey Wright is still at safety. Seems as if he is behind Dontae Carter.
- One of the battles of camp I'll be watching is linebacker, where Bryan Longwell and Prince Kollie are battling for a starting spot, probably in that order.
- There seems to be a feeling they're pleased with the three transfer linemen they got in LT Chase Mitchell (Liberty), C Steven Losoya (Mississippi State) and G Steven Hubbard (UTEP) and my guess is they'll all start.
- I'm not sure what they're doing with OL Grayson Morgan this year. He was doing light drills on the side rather than going through full reps. I'm guessing the transfer additions, plus the move of Gunnar Hansen from LT to LG, block his starting opportunity.
- Other guys doing bike/light work on the side, rather than fully participating in practice: WR Witt Edwards, WR Boski Barrett, Razor Miles Capers and DL Christian James.

I'll have some deeper observations as I attend more practices, which will be happening as soon as our kids get in school Wednesday.

Recruiting troubles-Football

I know it’s still early but man… what’s the deal with recruiting right now? On pace for Clarks worst class, and a bad class by Mason’s standards as well. Saw that we had lost one of our main recruiting guys to Boise at some point.

Feel like we’re at a significant disadvantage when it comes to recruiting during the actual season, especially this year.

Football Practice report #3 (08/02)

-Defense won the day today in my estimation, especially later in the day. Lots of PBUs and incompletions. Hard to gauge the running game right now without pads or Sedrick Alexander.

Offense:
-Thought the QB to receiver chemistry was a little bit better. I still have some questions as to how much they can really air it out. Feel like I've mostly seen short to intermediate out of Pavia and Johnson.

-Didn't think the ball security was at the level they'd have hoped for today. It was better the first two days from what I saw.

-Johnson I think is the most talented guy they have at QB if all is going right, all gonna depend on the downfield throwing ability for him and the level he can run the offense at. We know Pavia can run it well. Dickey and Berlowitz didn't stand out today, thought the two other guys took care of the ball better. Dickey is a little faster than I'd originally thought.

-Run game was hard to judge, Sedrick Alexander was off to the side doing work rather than being live. Looks like he's fine but wasn't in the mix the last two days. Moni Jones looks the part but hasn't stood out.

-Brycen Coleman made the play of the day in the end zone. He's really gifted and has flashed, just needs to do some work on his body and sure some things up.

-Cole Spence quietly has a good day each day from the looks of it. Standout again. Stowers made a few plays but wasn't incredibly impressive.

-Hard to tell on line today without pads, too. They're significantly better than they were in the spring there but still struggle from time to time.

-Receivers were really quiet from what I saw. Sherrill made a few plays, and maybe I missed some others, but I never saw a receiver emerge today.

Offensive standouts:
TE Cole Spence
WR Brycen Coleman

Defense:

-They were disruptive and had a good day.

-Secondary really made some plays, active hands all over the place. There were some great catches by Spence and Coleman that the defense couldn't have done much about.

-Kolbey Taylor was good, he can hit more than I thought he could. His length helps him close gaps too. Russell has improved a good bit from last season, he's active.

-Jaylin Lackey is drawing rave reviews. Didn't see much of him today but he looks to belong.

-Still not a great deal of pressure from what I saw, maybe I'm not giving that enough credit.

-Steven Sannienola was really impressive today, around the ball a lot. Longwell was around it, too.

-Would still expect a lot of De'Rickey Wright's reps to come at safety.

Defensive standouts:
S Steven Sannienola
CB Kolbey Taylor
CB Tyson Russell
