This game had a familiar feel to it

We got ahead. Blew the lead. Came back and won. Had players step up and make big plays. Being able to do this comes from confidence, in yourself and your teammates.

And, it reminds me somewhat of the 2011 game against UConn. No one knew what we had in Franklin's second game, we were so used to losing. That team should have lost that UConn game. Most Vanderbilt teams in my life would have lost that game. But, they didn't. They had something called confidence, and it started the first of three straight bowl games.

This game had a similar feel. We blew the lead. It felt like we blew the game, but, we didn't.

Pavia made plays. Defenders made plays. And, we came back and won.

Now, I'm not predicting three straight bowl games. But, as long as this offensive staff and strength coach stays here, Saturdays aren't going to be guaranteed losses either.

It was a great day, a big win. Enjoy it, Commodore family, we damn sure deserve it.

Anchor Down!

RIP KC Potter

This one is for the older alums. Vanderbilt has reported that KC Potter has passed away. I showed up on campus as a Freshman almost exactly 49 years ago and KC Potter was Dean of Student Life and really the face of the administration to most students. A really good guy who enjoyed spending time with students. I didn’t realize until now how young he was back then.

Pavia postgame comments

WHAT CAN HE BE AT THIS LEVEL?
It’s a compliment to Beck and Kill trusting them to recruit them
“People won me but it was never Power 5”
I think I’m the best player in the country and want to show it

MOTIVATION
Some people said I’m a poor man’s Trace McSorley
I’m here to play my game
Stop me and then you can talk
We have great players, OL did great

STUDENT SECTION CHANTS HIS NAME
He’s never been in a home stadium when there are more opposing fans
And sometimes he can’t hear the cadence
Appreciates those who did support them
They take all they can
They’re here to win games

LAST DRIVE
Told the O line they’re running to win
Asked Beck to put the ball in his hands
Beck asked him what he wanted to run
OL did a great job
Alexander, Sherrill, Skinner get shout-outs

PLAY TO STOWERS WHERE THEY LOOKED OFF
Miscommunication
Clean that up in film

THE UPHILL CLIMB AT VANDY
Coach Lea gets emotional when he talks about his team
I want to do it for him, he cares a lot
He’s got competition in the room
If he messes up he’d getting replaced

He’s got to get better
Means a lot that Lea trusts him
Lea is his biggest fan

THE TD PASS TO ALEXANDER
Corner ran with the post
Trie to get the LB to come down on him
Got it to Seddy and he did the rest

NOT TURNING IT OVER
It was big
Last two games at New Mexico State, he turned it over 7 times
He knew that was the biggest thing for them to win
He’s improved his throwing and that’s helpled

PEOPLE DOUBTED HIM, DID HE SHOW IT?
People still doubt me but I want to play in the NFL

HOW WELL DOES THE SYSTEM FIT HIM?
They have a fun offense. Weapons to have a fun offense
Stowers, 4 TE who can go in and play at one time
They’ll be electric on offense

AFTER THE MISSED FG, WHAT’S THE APPROACH?
I thought to myself this is God’s plan. What better way to put in in my hands and give me a chance
Mentioned chip on his shoulder
Zero offers out of high school

Ryan Longwell postgame

PRESSURE THEY GOT
Was big
Back end covered down and helped them get sacks

TIP TO SEABROOKS FOR PICK
Was running with my hand up
I was trying to find it “and saw the big boy running with it”
Teased that Seabrooks stole his glory

DRONES
A lot of containing him in the run was due to LBs
He and Langston can play on perimeter and fit into the box

THE COMEBACK
It speaks to how much they’ve grown and their resilience
They wouldn’t have done that last year
Shows how close they are to

LAST PLAY
He wasn’t on the field so he doesn’t know
Saw them cover down well and win the game

VALIDATION THE DEFENSE GETS TODAY
It’s nice but it changes nothing
They knew what they were and they performed

CELEBRATION
We were so happy
Probably the most energy he’d felt being here

THINGS TO CLEAN UP
Get the calls
Not lining up
They’re solid once they iron that out

THE THIRD QUARTER, THEY FOUGHT BACK, THE DIFFERENCE?
Their love for each other
They hyped each other up on sideline
They didn’t have that level of connection and love (before)

It’s tough if you don’t have the right people
They have the right people
The newcomers bought in and didn’t push back

Quincy Skinner postgame

SKINNER
WHAT WAS GOING THROUGH HIS HEAD ON THE TD
Praying to get the opportunities
Thanks to God
Diego is a baller
He knew he was in bounds

WHAT DID TODAY TEACH US ABOUT THE OFFENSE?
They have all they need to go on a run
With Diego at the helm anything is possible

DIEGO
He’s a leader, he’s a dog
He brings that to everybody
He brings the morale of the team up

WINNING 1-ON-1s
They have great DBs out there
They have everything they need
Coach Bailey pushes them, puts them in different situations
Russell, Hight, Berry are out there working

CLARK LEA COMMENTS
In a moment when they had a nice start to the season and a nice win, it’s about your teammates. Shouts-out Diermeier for being in the post-game celebration. Without his vision for success it doesn’t happen. Candice Lee is the best boss in America and the best teammate he can have.

I don’t know how the facilities team did it. At the scrimmages there was a lot of work to be done. Shouted out about four facilities people at Barton Malow.

“We are now on the road to change.:
