Off topic Coach Prime

Found a documentary covering Deion Sanders and Jackson State this past 2022 season on Amazon prime

I like this guy as a head coach. Calm, reassuring, positive, building a family culture, but will light the fuse when needed

I haven't followed him at all as a head coach, so I was coming into this documentary knowing nothing about what he did at Jackson State. i'm impressed, I see why Colorado hired the guy. It will be interesting to see what happens on a bigger stage

Mizzou is not the blueprint for us in basketball

We talked about the blueprint for our success in another thread, but Mizzou has done what we can’t do. Dennis Gates is a great coach no doubt, but in terms of his year 1 success we can’t do what he’s doing. Kobe Brown is the only non-transfer of their top 7 scorers. 2 of those guys Gates brought from his previous stop. Stack did bring in 4 transfers a couple years ago, but only 2 of those guys could even play at this level. When we do get into a rebuild, we have to give the next guy some time to flip the roster, but a good coach could get things going quickly

As the Basketball Turns

South Carolina could be our only SEC win this year.

Will Stack, now forever aka Jason Sanders, lose his s*** before January is over? Will he still be employed by Vanderbilt at the end of January? How many games will Jerry/Jason get tossed out of this year? Will Candice's head explode dealing with all of this? Will @ChesterCopperpot1 have to change his ass tat to Jason Sanders? Will Stack put a hit out on @Chris Lee and @tcstephenson for reporting the facts?

Stay tuned for another season of " As the Basketball Turns" to find out.

Jerry Stackhouse presser takeaways 1/5/23

Stack spoke to the media today, unfortunately I wasn't able to be there since I'm still home for break. Think this should be the last mid-week one I miss this year.

On Mizzou:
"Very good team, they play really hard, they try to pressure you, try to play at a really fast pace, I think it's gonna be important for us to take care of the ball and make sure that we continue to do the things that we've been doing offensively and continue to stay stingy defensively as well."

Also mentioned that they are a bit unconventional as a group, specifically in how they run the pick and roll with unconventional players.

Compares its pressure to what VCU brought. Says Vandy has to control turnovers and get offensive rebounds. Thinks they will double-team and trap often.

Stack said that he thinks Vandy could take advantage of its size advantage.

Said that he heard this will be a sellout and that they will have to bring energy early because of it.

General:

Stack said he likes where the team is at, cites his groups' versatility, how they've won in different ways, and the way they've been trending on the free throw line.

Mentioned again how his team is still in the process of learning of how to win.

Stack said he likes how his lineups are working and his group is embracing coming off the bench. Says it's still a game to game decision based on matchups.

Says Liam Robbins is doing a lot of good things, wants to help him more in P&R coverage and by throwing him better passes.

They're working on continuing to balance playing through the post and getting up a good amount of threes.

Rebounding continues to be an emphasis point, cites QMB and Ansong's rebounding vs SC.

Still thinks defense is the strong-suit of his team.

Twenty years of VandySports, with Seabass

VandySports celebrates its 20-year anniversary this week, and with that, we bring back Seabass, the most frequent and popular guest in the show's history. He and Chris Lee try to recount the funny circumstance under which they met, name their list of greatest players in each sport during that time, rewind some of the more memorable football moments, re-live some memorable moments of radio together, share the funniest message-board story of 20 years and more.

Taking questions for the 20-year-anniversary podcast with Mike Rapp

The guest line is presented by Michael Kendrick of The Kendrick Group. Michael is a local carpenter and a lifelong Vandy fan. He builds bookshelves, cabinets, picture frames, furniture and made-to-order items, including a display case for my prized Dale Murphy jersey. I have seen Michael’s work and he’s a true craftsman. If you’re in the market for custom woodwork, give Michael a call at 615.830.9458.

Today’s mailbag is sponsored by Sutherland & Belk, a family owned injury law firm. If you or a loved one has been hurt in an accident, give Taylor or Russell a call at 615-846-6200 to see what your rights are and if they can help.

The show, of course, is presented by Dr. Jody Jones, DDS.

I'm in the process of setting a time with Mike, this will probably be the first one I'll do.

The blueprint is there for the next coach

Obviously Stackhouse’s recruiting has been subpar outside of the nice class he brought in this year, and he has whiffed on most of the transfers he has brought in as well. I’ll always appreciate Bryce for shooting for the stars with recruiting as that’s something that Vanderbilt hasn’t always done, but I don’t know if consistent one and dones could work at Vanderbilt. Bryce has recruited well at Grand Canyon, especially in the portal, but similarly I don’t know if that could work here either. Disregarding his coaching ability, I don’t think either of those facets of his recruiting really fit what Vanderbilt can do. In all sports we’ve generally relied on continuity and experience to win and I don’t think that’s something that we can go away from. You can’t stay away from the portal either, but we can’t rely on it.

As we’ve talked about before on here, Kevin Stallings recruiting was really the sweet spot of what Vanderbilt needs to succeed. Outside of his last two years which were awful classes (he lost his main recruiter on the staff) his average classes were around the same quality as the current class Stack brought in, with many being better. He’d have the occasional dud like the Jeter class but many of his classes were really solid. He got a 5 star in Jenkins, and had players like Jenkins, Jones, and Baldwin who were good enough to go to the NBA early, but his rosters weren’t built solely on those guys. Very solid high school recruiting coupled with efficient use of the portal for guys who have production are how you win here. That’s what I want to see from the next coach

We Are Not Alone . . . . [Men's Basketball]

Georgetown set a dubious Big East record on Wednesday night, losing its 25th straight regular-season conference game to break a tie with DePaul for the longest such streak in the history of the league.
. . . . . . . .
Ewing is now 73-95 during his six years in charge of his alma mater, and just 26-68 in regular-season Big East play.
. . . . . . .
After the Hoyas reached the NCAA tournament in 2021, Ewing received an extension that reportedly fully guarantees his contract through 2026.

Ewing's roster has seen repeated turnover because of students transferring away from Georgetown, and before the start of this season, he overhauled his staff by replacing all three assistants and brought in several transfer players, including Spears, who came over from Duquesne.
. . . .
"I'm a very prideful person, and Georgetown is a very prideful university,'' Ewing said at his postgame news conference Wednesday, "and we don't want to be associated with a losing streak, but it is what it is.''

Baseball 44 Days

And the VandyBoys play TCU in Dallas. Anyone here planning to attend that weekend series? Also playing Oklahoma State and Texas.

I am not as optimistic as I usually am due to the offensive uncertainty, but anything to distract from this basketball season will be nice

Hopefully a couple of weeks after that we will be in the midst of a basketball coaching search.

Why didn't Kevin Stallings.....

For all of you that think that its ok for 3 of our best 4 players to come off of the bench every game, why didn't Stallings bring Taylor, Jenkins, and Ezeli off of the bench so they could "watch, and get a feel for the flow of the game"? Hell, we might have made the Final Four if Stallings had used this masterful coaching tactic.

Buzz Williams takes one for the team managers

I can only imagine the conversation among the managers, "I thought you had them. No, you said you were going to get them. I never said that, you said you would."

Associated Press

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Texas A&M trailed before the opening tip at Florida, a scenario neither coach had experienced or even knew was a possibility before Wednesday night.

Shortly after leaving the court following final warmups, the Aggies realized managers had left their game jerseys at the team hotel. They double-timed it back to grab them, but officials hit them with a delay of game penalty -- officially deemed an administrative technical foul -- because the start had to be postponed a few minutes.

Florida guard Will Richard made the free throw for a 1-0 lead before the opening tip. The Gators (7-7) barely led again and lost 66-63 at home to drop to 0-2 in Southeastern Conference play for the second straight season. The Aggies (9-5, 1-0 SEC) won for the first time in six trips to Gainesville and gave Buzz Williams a victory in his 500th game as a head coach.

This one, though, will be remembered for that pregame point.

"I forgot the jerseys in my hotel room," Williams said. "That's probably the right way to say it because I used to be a manager. If that would have happened, my head coach would have stuck up for me. You don't want the jerseys to get wrinkled so they hang them in my room, and I just forgot to put them on the bus.

"It's my fault and it won't happen again."

Williams was admittedly protecting his student managers.

His players, though, used the pregame hole, albeit the smallest one possible, as extra motivation. They quickly undressed Florida and led by as many 11 points in the opening 20 minutes. They also rallied down the stretch after the Gators tied the score at 63 thanks to Colin Castleton's steal and layup.

"I think the jerseys were a big part of that," said A&M's Julius Marble, who finished with 17 points and six rebounds.

Marble said the team was willing to play in practice jerseys.

"It was an option. They were maroon," Marble said. "We're like, 'Look, we'll wear the practice jerseys. We're underdogs. We'll grind it out. We don't care.'"

But how exactly did the ones that matter get left behind?

"Just moving too fast, I think, just trying to get here, so ready for the game," said guard Tyrece Radford, who also scored 17 points. "Just moving too fast honestly. From the outside looking in, it probably looked like it was a big distraction, but [coach] does his best to keep us locked in and just trying to turn a negative into a positive."

It was a negative for the Gators, who were admittedly confused when they came out of the locker room and saw no one on the visiting bench.

"I'm 37, I've played basketball my whole life and that's never happened to me in an aspect or any point in my career," Florida coach Todd Golden said. "It wasn't ideal. I thought we were ready to go and we were sitting there maybe 15 or 20 minutes, waiting for these guys to show up. It is what it is. We didn't handle the situation well enough."

Technical fouls issued before college basketball games are rare but have happened.

Kansas State picked up a technical before its 2014 NCAA tournament game against Kentucky because a walk-on dunked during pregame warmups. North Florida got hit with a similar penalty during a regular-season game the following year. In June 2015, the NCAA abolished its rule that prohibited pregame dunking within 20 minutes of the opening tip. It's unclear how many pregame techs, if any, have been issued since.

Golden couldn't recall hearing about even one.

"It's something that might happen at my son's CYO [Catholic Youth Organization] game but usually not at the SEC level," he quipped.

NIL / Agents / NCAA

This is what the NCAA has invited into their home. One of my best friends is good friends and coworkers with the dad of a very highly sought after high school recruit. The big sports super agents and their groups are signing these high schoolers to agreements. Here is the kicker....The recruits are getting zero money to sign, but instead the agents spring into action after they sign with a school. After their freshman year, the agents are essentially back-channeling with other schools to come to big $ agreements and have the player hit the portal to transfer and collect. This is just pure insanity.

Basketball NCAA to expand March Madness to 90 teams…

In before, “we still won’t make it” dad jokes.

I didn’t like expansion beyond 64. The slight expansion to 68 has provided a watered down product imho. 90 has some rough implications for the basketball regular season. This would hurt all but those who profit from the actual tournament to me.
