SEC Basketball - Coaching Search

The great SEC is getting handled again in the first game. Overall this board, the media, Jimmy Dykes especially keeps saying how good the SEc is. But when they get to the tourney they have mostly beeen at best disappointing the last many yrs.

Why, I strongly believe it’s the offensive philosophy or lack of an offense. Most offenses are predicated by the fast break/defensive pressure turning to offense and when they have to perform against a half court defense it’s dribble dribble dribble shoot or drive to the basket or one dribble handoff then try to score or the high ball screen/two man offense Basically relying on one on one basketball. Very little offense is run.

The two things I want in the next VU coach is one that recruits hard and gets players that you can win with , and a coach that runs an offense (I’m 100% fine with some of the above or doing that the 2nd half of the shot clock , but not 90% or more of the offense, it doesn’t typically work in the tourney and not sure VU can get good enough athletes to really do that which is bad anyways ).

Does this rule out a Bucky or Kelsey, I don’t know but I want to see VU return to running an offense. It’s been too long and for the most part it’s proven in tourney play not to have a high percentage of working.

More from CSL interview on Star V

Great pub on the new V! She didn't even get it herself at the beginning! Word salad indeed.

IF* Alexander, Maddux were interviewed AND BUCKY MCMILLIAN HAS NOT BEEN

Fire everyone involved. Everyone.... Chancellor D, AD, Whoever that Patel lady is, John Ingram, Cornelius Vanderbilt, everyone.. Just shut it down.

The HC that had BILL SELF say "I don't want to play against Bucky Ball again" after almost leading a comeback with a group of misfits (seriously, did you watch), doesn't get an interview - BUT a FORMER High School coach does?

Bucky McMillian, who's went 34-6 in the socon with SAMFORD over the last 2 seasons, does not even get a phone call?

But Casey Alexander, who's 40-25 the last 2 seasons at Belmont, gets an interview?

MAKE. IT. MAKE. SENSE.

Basketball Thursday coaching thoughts

I'll begin this with the sentiment of "the world does not center around any one of us, so, take your fights elsewhere."

Anyway... the last 48 hours has been full of contradictory things and not much solid info, so, I wanted to make some calls, gather what I can and let that sink in.

It's been very quiet on the Vandy end so, file most of this under "I think" and not "I know."

- I would take the field to Chris Mack right now. My thought that he's going to be the next coach decreases every day. Among other reasons, if he's the guy, it would have been easy to finalize by now.
- Early in the week, the sentiment was "they're going Power 5."
- Within 24 hours of me saying that, I've heard the name of just about every mid-major coach connected with them, save Bucky McMillan. His name has not popped up once in this.
- I think they are working from a pretty short list and a lot of the names are courtesy interviews.
- My guess is the hire is still playing basketball right now but I'm not sure who it is. I wouldn't sleep on Kyle Smith at Washington State but I could be wrong.
- Candice has circled the wagons. The real committee is very small and from what I have gathered, outside influence is not being sought or if it is, they've kept that small and quiet.
- If I had to guess, we're 1-2 weeks from a hire.

Will get you more as I get it. I'm sorry I'm short on "fact!" here but I do my best.

Would UK ever edge out our Stack firing by canning Cal?

Was listening to my second favorite sports pod as they talked about Kentucky’s recent postseason woes under Cal.

2021 they go 9-16. Incredibly talented teams to only peak at two Elite 8’s over nine years. They’re shooting lights out but have three 7 footers yet don’t guard anyone. First round loss in SECT this year and an earlier noncon loss to NC Wilmington. Ky’s SEC & NCAA tourney records over the past three years is 2-6.

Of course Cal’s pretty much on a lifetime contract and Kentucky’s buyout reportedly would be $30 million if they ever did decide enough was enough. Still, I’ve got a couple extended family who went to UK and both tell me there is Cal fatigue throughout the fanbase.
