House V. NCAA

Has everyone seen what’s being reported as the settlement deal? It seems like the big boys are going to have to put $20m per year up as athletic player compensation. The details are sketchy at best as to how this would be divided between sports especially with Title ix out there. If it goes ahead Vandy will have to go along with the big fish or risk being relegated to the second tier.
Incidentally I don’t know how a university can directly pay a player and not have them deemed an employee. It would be hard to maintain that someone under as much control as an athlete is just an independent contractor.

She's Ba-a-ck!!!!

Just watching a nationally broadcast talk show and a segment about a KC sportswriter calling for the Chiefs to replace their kicker with a female kicker. Sarah Fuller was mentioned by name but there was no mention of the college she attended. I thought we might skate on this one but then they showed a clip of her kicking off and a wonderful closeup of her in her Vanderbilt jersey. I guess we are stuck with this for good.

Who's the Home team at Hoover ???

Ok, so my little wifey poo wants to go to Hoover on Tuesday. We haven't been to the tourney in more than a decade. I'm checking out the tickets and I would like to know if the VandyBoys are the home team (1st base dugout) or the visitors for that 4:30 game on Tuesday. I believe the higher seed is the home team, but I really don't remember how that is decided.

Also, does anyone know what the situation is like for "handicapped parking" at Hoover Met Complex? (I'm not in a wheelchair, but I use a cane at times and suffer with bad knees, back, and hip)

Basketball Portal Rankings

247 has Vandy as the 27th ranked class..

On3 (WTF is an On3?) has us at 49th. They are so current they don’t even have Hoggard though but I don’t think he moves us up using their algorithm.

What other team rankings are out there?

Pitching for Tuesday?

Sorry if this has been discussed.

Who do we have available for Tuesday? Huge game in my opinion. Beat Florida 3 out of 4 and I am feeling good about where we are. Plus, their RPI is slightly ahead of ours and we would finish ahead of them in the RPI, which would be big.

I keep holding out hope that McElvain will emerge, but I get the feeling he is out for the season. We used every decent pitcher and then some over the weekend. If we didn't need to go to Futrell Sunday, he would be the guy, but he went at least three innings I think.

Is this going to be a Johnny Wholestaff kind of game? That scares me. House money playing against the vols if we can somehow beat Florida.

Men's Basketball - Coaching Hires - "Grades"

May (A), Smith (A -), Sprinkle (A+) and Kelsey (B) all graded higher than Byington (Of course, Calipari and Pope rated higher, also.). [Article written prior to Hoggard commitment) (Interesting that the writer views Manon as the anchor player among the recruits (no pun intended), although, in a weird way, Chris may be the "anchor" within the team)]

Fantastic recruiting job by Byington. Now, can he get a group of individuals who have not played with each other to function as a cohesive team? I am cautiously optimistic that he can do so.

Vanderbilt Commodores: Mark Byington

Pros: Byington's life changed after he led James Madison to a win at Michigan State in the 2023-24 opener. Overall, he won 32 games last season -- a mark Vanderbilt has never reached -- elevating his profile among potential Division I coaching hires this offseason. In his first year in Nashville, Tennessee, Cornell transfer Chris Manon (12.5 PPG) will anchor Byington's incoming class that aims to duplicate the coach's success of a season ago.

Cons: This isn't the Sun Belt. Byington will have to compete against John Calipari, Nate Oats, Bruce Pearl, Rick Barnes and other top SEC coaches in one of America's toughest leagues. The school's academic standards have traditionally created challenges in recruiting too. And it hasn't won an NCAA tournament game since 2012. It's fair to question whether Vanderbilt needed a more prominent name to overcome those obstacles.
