Football Just a football post.

How do you contain WF offense ? Is it containable ? For now we don't have the talent to get QB sacks and really WF's offense with it's quick reads and seems like always ahead of the chains offense makes it hard to put them in 3rd and longs . So can we give ourselves a better than 50% chance on 3rd downs ? Maybe.

The chances of getting to the QB is slim tomorrow but if Hartman plays. They are NOT going to call plays to put him in any danger so it's going to be a lot of WR screens , power run, quick slants , and occasional deep ball 80% of the time down the sideline for 50-50 balls. VU to have any chance has to be able to get to 3rd and 5+ to have any chance. Yeah VU will score points but I don't think anybody thinks we can win a boat race tomorrow. Defense will be the difference tomorrow. Contain and gamble I think will be key.

DL: RPO offense. Hartman will not run tomorrow so focus on RB and forget about getting a sack but would rather keep your eyes on the QB and get them hands up to throw off the timing and arch of those slants . 3rd and long get you some but other than that be disciplined .

LB: Someone has to be the spy in the backfield at all times. Motion man, RB, and a occasionally blitz on 1st and 2nd down. The others have to play deep and read and react and make a otherwise WF 8 yard play only 4 or less. WE HAVE TO GET to 3rd down.

DB's : Play as tight as you can and make them throw the perfect pass down the sideline. If you get beat so what they earned it move on but shut down the WR screen and quick toss.

Safeties: Will be the key along with the LB's. Safeties have to be our gamblers and be ready to make the break on balls or help with the screen game and make the sure tackle. Anchor Down Men It's an opportunity you have earned ! I'll be there !

Interesting perspective

Took this quote from the Wake Forum, The Pulpit (very little discussion there!)

“Conor, I'm assuming that any new wrinkles on offense and defense will be held back against Vandy and Liberty unless necessary, hoping they don't need to show their hand until Clemson.
Edited to add that I just watched coach Lea's press conference. You can see why Vandy hired him. The scary thing is that he really understands Wake's offense, and is a good defensive coach. I just don't think they have the horses yet to stay with Wake for 4 quarters.”

So, what says the Board? Does Clark’s knowledge of wake’s offense and defensive prowess suggest an advantage for Vanderbilt when Wake has the ball? Or are we really so defunct that we don’t yet have the horses to compete with the Deacons?

SIAP - Athletic story on Nik Valdiserri

Good article about the day in the life of VU recruiting coordinator Nik Valdiserri. This is from a month ago but just showed up on my Twitter feed. It didn't show up on my feed on the Athletic site, although I'm following VU Football there. It's behind their paywall, so I'll just post a few snippets.

"Similar to the way Notre Dame prioritized recruits when Valdiserri worked with the Fighting Irish, Vanderbilt categorizes its prospects with three tiers.

The top tier is reserved for commits and players the program is aggressively pursuing. The second tier, a group that Vanderbilt refers to as “hold,” is the list of players the Commodores have offered but who may be missing a trait — whether that’s academically or athletically. There are exceptions, but Vanderbilt signees are expected to have a 3.0-grade point average in order to stay in line with the school’s rigorous academic standards. Then the third tier is a group the Commodores call “monitor” — prospects who are local with lower-level offers or players whom Vanderbilt has already evaluated in the event something falls through in the top tiers."

"
Valdiserri has the title of director of recruiting, but the department is headed up by Barton Simmons, Lea’s childhood friend who was previously a national recruiting analyst at 247Sports. Simmons, Valdiserri and the rest of the staff are charged with identifying prospects who can handle the academic workload at Vanderbilt and — perhaps more importantly — compete in the SEC.

“We’re trying to send the message, ‘You’re not coming here for anything but to play football at Vanderbilt,'” Valdiserri said. “And I know it all sounds crazy, too, like, ‘Oh, you’ve got the degree, you’ve got the city,’ but if we’re having kids choose Vanderbilt football because of the academics, then we’re doing an injustice to our program. This has to be a football decision for our guys that we’re recruiting.”

"
He jokes that maybe he’ll run a brewery in 15 years, given all of his different interests. But for now, this is all he can think about. And working for Lea was a no-brainer.

“I knew if he offered me a job … I would have probably taken it regardless just because of who he was. Or who he is,” Valdiserri says. “And so I always joke with recruits, it’s kind of my sales pitch, ‘If he had moved to Alaska and wanted to build a program there — I would have been following suit.”’"

Off topic Coach O

While speaking at the Little Rock Touchdown Club on Tuesday, the former Tigers coach humorously discussed the details of his exit. He specifically mentioned a meeting he had with LSU athletic director Scott Woodward to finalize the terms of his departure.

"We had a meeting," Orgeron said reflecting on the meeting in October 2021, "(Scott Woodward) said, 'Coach, things aren't going well.' And I said, "No sh-t, Ray Charles could see that."

"He told me, 'You've got $17.1 million left on your contract and we're gonna give it to you.' I said, 'What time do you want me to leave and what door do you want me out of?'"

Football Quick favor please (and you'll be glad you did)

There's an app called "Stakes" that sponsors my SEC show. The app offers you a way to bet (at no cost) on games just for fun (no money involved) and you can make up your own bets, too, and win NFT's if you're successful.

If you don't mind, please go to playwithstakes.com/14 and sign up. You can use the promo code SOUTHEASTERN14 to get some extra coins. (Or you should just be able to download the "Stakes" app in your App Store).

I've put in a few bets on Vanderbilt this weekend, so that would be a good starting point. And if you want to create a question or two of your own, that'd be great.

Football Wake Forest playing tonight

Wake Forrest plays VMI tonight at 6:30 central time on the ACC network.

Im pretty sure that I don't have the ACC network, but I will be keeping up with it as much as possible.

How much of an advantage is Wake having a couple of days extra to rest and prepare for us? Not sure, but I would think/hope that our staff has been working some Wake stuff into some of our preseason practices.
