even more thoughts on the goalpost parade

Just watched a bunch of videos of the journey from West End down Broadway to the river. I never seem to tire of seeing it. I just think it represents the overwhelming joy we all feel. But the thought also came to me how great it was to see our streets spontaneously overtaken by a large group of people, many of them young, just to celebrate with pure joy. And with the cooperation of the police and fire departments. No violence, no property damage, no problems, no protests. As someone else said---"authentic Nashville". Anchor Down!

AP Poll update after bama win

Kind of sucks for Vandy to get #30 after that win. Northern Illinois got ranked after beating ND. I feel they didn’t take the close loss to #7 Mizzou very seriously, especially after their throttling. Vanderbilt did get 26 votes with some of the people who gave them a vote listed above. I feel that we matchup very well with Kentucky but this is setting up as a serious let down game after all the energy exerted this week by the players. Gonna need a win there to be ranked in the top 25.

In need of a newspaper headline

I live out of town and I could not find a physical copy to frame of any headline about the win. Whether it be a Tennesseean (even though they’re trash) or any headline of a news paper that is frame worthy, if you got a couple copies would you please send one my way. I’ll happily pay for shipping and pay you for the trouble. As you all know this is an event that won’t happen again and I am trying desperately to have something that will commemorate the moment.

VUFB Bowl Bound

This season, VU has experience so many injuries. Alabama or Georgia has one injury to an edge guy or a running back and expectations are if they lose the next game the reason is clear.

About 1/2 of VU's defense was out last night! 10 players total were out or questionable and several were in and out during the game in Columbia. UM the #7 team, at home, had only two player out.

If VU had the two corners they signed at the beginning of the season, they would easily be 4-0.

What if you were given the asignment to integrate +50 (# of new VU FB players) new employees into your company. As the CEO (head coach) you will be responsible for taking a demotion and taking the jobs of your friends up and down the organization. All this while the new employees are being paid huge bonuses, but the legacy employees get little or no increase in salary. What do you think that work environment would be like?

While you're at it, replace most of the company's top leadership (new coaches).

On top of that, do it in one of the most corrupt, woke environments in all corporate America (Vanderbilt Athletic Department).

With all the limitations put on Clark Lea (great communicator, defensive specialist, hometown boy, Vanderbilt alumni) this season, +60K fans last night in Columbia, MO knew who had the best team (Sitting on the 50 yardline, I heard what they said and watched them leave before the game was over).

With all the obstacles Clark Lea has navigated, he should be awarded the NCAA Coach-of-the-Year for the first quarter of the season.

Going to a bowl game this season will be totally dependent on injury. If a miracle happens and Vanderbilt can get some of the injured back, limit more injuries, this team will be bowl bound.

Clark is a special coach and this is a special team.

Off topic Malachi Moore and Bama deserved a couple more flags

Malachi Moore grabbing Pavia’s facemask and slamming his head into the ground was one of the dirtiest plays I’ve seen on a Vandy player after the whistle. There was also a Bama player who threw a punch at Alexander after the whistle on an earlier running play. Neither were called. Hats off to this team for keeping its composure and not falling into that trap and getting a penalty for retaliating

My family's story

On Friday night I asked Mrs. SteveE79 what our plans were for Saturday. She said there weren't any. I long ago lost the stomach for even watching an SEC power take over stadium and run the score up on us. I noted the forecast was for a clear skies and nice breeze in NE OK, so we spent Saturday afternoon sailing our old boat.

When we got back to the dock, I checked the score on my phone. It was 33-28, 6 minutes to go, and we were threatening. But I'm too experienced to mess with the gods, so I didn't even put the audio on. When I told the Mrs. (not a VU alum, but has 45 years of experience with one) she told me that there was too much time left, don't get my hopes up. After the score to go 40-28, I said F-it, and put the audio on as we drove home.

In the car my phone rang, interrupting the audio feed. It was son #1, VU alum class of 2002, asking me if I knew what was happening. He's a Naval Commander, who had traveled to Houston from his base in Seattle to visit his brother, son #2, VU alum class of 2004, to watch Detroit (his birthplace) beat the Astros, and visit his 7 year old nephew (potential VU grad, class of 2040). They had been running around all day doing brother/uncle/nephew things, while periodically checking the score. But not wanting to jinx anything, that's all they did. Until they got back home, at about the 6 minute mark, and said screw it - turn it on.

We told them - interesting story, but we can't talk to you and listen to the game - so let's talk later.

After the win, we talked to about 30 minutes, sharing our collective joy. While talking, I got texts from various relatives. After that conversation, I called my brother-in-law, VU class of 1979, in PA. He had been monitoring the score as well, not wanting to jinx it, until about the 2:00 mark, when he said to hell with it, and turned on the game. I told him I was at least twice the fan he was, since I beat him by about 3 minutes on the game clock. He admitted as much. It turns out his daughter, VU Law 2010, was visiting at the time, which he used as an excuse.

Is it weird that we all cared enough to monitor the game, were afraid to jinx it, but couldn't hold out to the end? Or is it just the natural consequence of experiencing years of something you love disappointing you, and just not being able to totally end the relationship? In any event we all agreed to head to the Anchor Collective site and ante up.

God bless you, all those that made yesterday happen. We don't know, and may never know, who all of them are. But yesterday was a big step in burying the thought that "we have no chance, I can't bear to watch".

Now let's go get more.
