Basketball Saturday morning coaching search-related thoughts

Good morning!

I checked with an industry source this morning. The names seemed to be the same: Chris Mack (unemployed), Josh Schertz (Indiana State), Pat Kelsey (Charleston), Nico Medved (Colorado State), Kyle Smith (Washington State) with Mitch Henderson (Princeton), Bob Ritchey (Furman) and Bucky McMillan (Samford) perhaps as possibilities.

Some other notes:

- There is some increasing buzz that the chancellor will play a bigger role in this than thought. There is a lot in the air about faith being lost in how the athletic department has handled its business and some sentiment that maybe some new voices are needed. I have also heard that Renaissance may not play as much of a role now. I cannot warrant this as fact (I guess we'll know more for sure after the fact) but I do think the fact that the candidate pool is what it is suggests there is something to this.
- Timing is important. Vanderbilt is in line with several other schools for a lot of these names; I'm not sure how hot a commodity Chris Mack is or isn't but those other four guys are on a lot of lists, including some that would be better jobs than this one.
- Some background here, none of it ground-breaking if you follow college hoops but still important things to remember. I'll quote nearly verbatim from a source: NIL and the transfer portal have changed how coaches evaluate jobs. It's just too hard to recruit if you have to wait on admission answers and transcript evaluations. There has to be an organized, quantifiable and competitive NIL program in place during recruitment. This is why some schools are declining NIT bids. The portal opens Monday. Schools need to be ready to move quickly. If you are an agent who has a coach with options, you are vetting schools on all this and looking to put your coach in the better situations.

I"ll add more as I get it.

Baseball Kozeal, Duke, and Cohen the whiner

Sounds like Cam Kozeal is on the 27 man roster and was warming up tonight. Shoulder issue and he is progressing.

The Duke arm still being evaluated. That sounds ominous. Crap

John Cohen, AD for Auburn and former Mississippi State and (before that) UK coach, was upset that Corbin was on the field. Literally, Corbs is standing with his feet on the turf Maybe a foot length from the top step of the dugout. Vanderbilt has all kinds of financial advantages and he’s calling the SEC offfice about Corbin and Vandy.

Get you some 11-1, John, you loser.

The Chancellor cares

I went to see the bowling team today in Smyrna (it's the only chance of the year to see them close to home). The Chancellor was there. You heard me right; the VU Chancellor was there to support the bowling team. He was just standing there like a regular fan, so I went over to speak to him, and we talked for a while. I asked if he ever went to the baseball games, and he told me that he would be there tonight.
Running a university is a huge job (I guess; I've never done it). If the boss is willing to support the "minor" sports, you have to believe he cares about the basketball coaching search.

Tourney Success Drives Applications

Gonna leave this right here for the nice folks in Vanderbilt administration to ponder as they consider what's important to make this school as good as it can be:

A few big bubble womens games today

Fairfield playing Canisius at 10:00am today in their conf semis - VU fans rooting for the one loss Fairfield team to win their tourney to avoid a possible bubble team and make that win look better and better for VU

Ivy League semis start today (and yes I talked about some games last weekend but that was still the regular season, sorry). Princeton looks to be a lock so want them to win the next two and Columbia to lose one of the next two (preferably today).

MTSU playing their semifinal game , I think they would be a strong bubble team if they were not to win their conf tourney (they have a win over Tennessee on a neutral court and don’t have a bad loss with a record of 27-4).

Drake at 26-5 playing their quarter final game in the MVC looks to be a tourney team so need them to win their conf tourney.

There are think at least 3 conf tourney games with teams of 4 losses or less today besides the ones I mentioned. I’m not real sure any of them are strong bubble contenders but just in case those teams are

Stony Brook (best win is Columbia) at 25-3 a couple of losses that will be considered questionable

Toledo 26-4 best win Michigan and Ball St, only one bad loss to Cincinnati (finished under 500 and 13th in B12)

Ball St 28-4 Best wins Toledo and I guess Georgia, only one bad loss to Northern Illinois.

Of note Ball St and Toledo are both in the MAC so probably prefer one of them lose today. Toledo losing by 8 early 3rd qtr - again don’t really think either of these teams are strong bubble contenders but listing just in case.

Quick Note on Bucky McMillian

Was told by someone that would know that he is friends with Drew Maddux. Drew posted a glowing recommendation on FB for Bucky a couple of days ago. If Bucky is hired, would make a lot of sense to bring Drew on as an assistant to repair relationships with basketball alumni as well as tap into his local high school recruiting ties and Nike grassroots network from when he ran those camps.

Something to keep an eye on. Since he is young and would probably benefit from the wisdom of an older coach, I would talk to Rick Byrd about serving as a Quality Control analyst similar to what they have done with Clark Lea.
