Basketball Thursday afternoon update

Still no official firing confirmation just for the record but we all know where this is heading.

- seems to be a belief in the agent community that they will offer Chris Mack but there is a thought Mack may want to go back to Xavier if Sean Miller goes to Louisville or Ohio State.

- Princeton’s Mitch Henderson is also a name to watch.

- industry source says there is “a fair amount of concern about working for Candice.” I’ve told you all along I thought he was being retained. I am told she recently told him face to face it’s not happening. The “coaching changes” account (not my source) tweeted out some things along those lines. That will eventually come out publicly and could be a wild card here.

Mack has been highly successful at P5 programs - I think he creates the highest “floor” for Vandy hoops. Vanderbilt would make the NCAA 75% + of the time.

Bucky is a winner - he will dedicate his life to turning around Vanderbilt basketball. But he’s yet to coach in the Power 5 and plays a unique style that may not be attractive to 4/5 star players. I believe he has a higher ceiling than Mack but a lower floor.

I also love that Bucky and Drew Maddox have a great relationship - GET HIM ON STAFF!

On the Vanderbilt job

Think it's a lot more appealing than it's been portrayed to be. That's reflected in the candidate list and some of our previous reporting. The practice facility will be a draw, as will the supposed NIL help that they're getting. Feels like it will be a deep hole to dig out of on the personnel side and there's always the academic restrictions, but there's a potential to the job that people don't realize.

Think they've got a chance to make a nice hire.

Basketball Varys was always my favorite character

Take it for what it is worth-
I have moved my expectation to Jerry being fired/mutual agreement to 9.99998 out of 10

The same person who told me Clark would not make any staff changes last year is saying it a done deal. The Stackhouse era is over.

The same booster who told me about the nil push a few weeks before the word got out like wildfire (which I shared privately with others) has said the buyout is handled, and he expects the university to move on. 8.4 million is what he believes it is based on remaining calendar year then the remaining years. He does not believe Stackhouse will step aside: who would? 8 million is a lot of money no matter who you are.

I do not believe the UT game was the final nail in the coffin. Media messaging on the topic has changed a lot this week and not just on rivals. I shared this info with others in DMs before the game but wanted to wait to talk to someone before going public. Maybe winning the UT game gets a couple chest compressions of life.

I do not think CSL’s seat is hot. I do believe she will be making the decision about the next coach. I do believe feelers have been sent out through a third party. My gut says the next coach will fit a more traditional Vandy basketball coach schematically.

Vandy basketball nil is not lacking. It’s per player potential is more competitive than football. Between the facility update and a good nil network, I think Vandy will have a strong list of candidates.

This is gossip/rumors/not media reporting. Just sharing what I have heard.

If Jerry remains after this season, it will be chaos caused by BIG money boosters/former players. I wouldn’t be stunned to see a major shakeup in the athletic department caused by the serious ramifications and the chancellor having to step in.

Seems like you just go ahead and hire Mack

His record is borderline elite. I don’t think we have ever hired a coach with multiple Sweet 16s and Elite 8s and multiple other accomplishments such as multiple conference coach of the year, conference and regular season championships etc. I think Bucky is a new generation elite coaching talent that will set off a major excitement and winning bomb in the SEC but I mean Mack has been there and done that.
