when pondering our current qb situation, one need only look back ( obviously ) at our last few recruiting classes to see wherein the problems began.
cjf evaluated, recruited , and signed the following quarterbacks while here:
1) Kris Kentera …never played a down as qb and has made a semi-successful switch to wr
2) Lafonte Thourogood ..never played a down at VU, transferred out after first year
3) Josh Grady .. was a high school qb, recruited as qb/athlete, and although a seemingly great kid, his greatest contribution to the team was as a sideline cheerleader
4) Patton Robinette..the general. was much maligned by half of fan base while leading team to many memorable victories. injuries and a more promising medical career abruptly ended his time on the field
5) Chad Kanoff …never made it to campus, enrolled at Princeton instead
6) J. McCrary …as 2nd teamer behind PR, was hailed as the savior of VU football. great kid, great smile, with a propensity for making absolutely gut wrenching decisions and throws at the most inopportune times
objectively, 4 out of 6 were absolute busts, 1 proved to be a gamer with limited skills, and 1 has proven to be a decent athlete lacking the mindset to overcome poor decision making. relative to other Power5 programs, the qb cupboard was left rather bare.
cdm evaluated, recruited, and signed the following:
1) W. Freebeck..thrown to wolves as freshman with less than stellar results. supposedly blessed with very strong arm, but lacks mobility
2) S. Stankavage … rumored to be playing superbly thru much of spring prior to injury ..status unclear currently
3) K. Shurmur …perhaps most highly ranked of all the qb recruits. untested true freshman
with limited touches, it's difficult to grade out these prospects, but it seems clear that none thus far have distinguished themselves as someone capable of leading the team. perhaps that changes this weekend ?
all to say, most students of football ( college in particular ) realize that a serviceable , at the very least, qb is absolutely mandatory for the success of any team. without one, teams are doomed to inconsistent play and improbable losses. and that , in a nutshell, is where we are.
