Someone asked me my thoughts on a depth chart. Keep in mind, I’m operating on really limited info but here’s my guess on the first team based on what I’ve gathered:
QB: Seals
RB: Brooks
WR: Cam Johnson
WR: Chris Pierce
WR: Amir Abdur-Rahman
TE: Bresnahan
LT: Steen
LG: Dawkins
C: Miller
RG: Hernandez
RT: Mignone
DE: Odeyingbo
DT: Tidd
DT: Birchmaier
DE: Mintze
OLB: Hebert
MLB: Moore
OLB: Alston Orji
S: Coppet
S: Jerkins
CB: D.C. Williams
CB: Mahoney
Some notes:
OFFENSE
They are really, really decimated on the OL. Holes in the running game are just about non-existent and they have to get throws off quickly into tight windows. Just thinking out loud here: If they don’t have tons of play-makers at wide receivers, I wonder if they’ll have to go less spread and multiple-TE sets instead. They do have several tight ends on the roster but I honestly have no idea what the pecking order would be after Ben Bresnahan.
I think WR Cam Johnson had a TD catch today from QB Ken Seals.
At QB: I maintain what I’ve said for a while, I think Seals will start. I think he makes intelligent decisions and reads and gets rid of the ball quickly, which you absolutely have to do in this offense.
The wild-card to me is QB Danny Clark. I think he’s got the strongest arm on the team and has made some good throws at times. The question (based on past history) I have is if he’s consistently accurate and I just don’t have enough info to make a judgment on that.
As for QB Mike Wright, I think he’s had some issues with basic throws and maybe even with ball security at times. I’ve also heard he might be a factor in the QB race, but using some common sense, I think their margin for error is zero and that to me could be a bit of a red flag in terms of him wining the job.
I hear Ja’Veon Marlow continues to work at running back. Again, not sure what kind of factor he’s going to be but apparently he’s being used there and not in the slot.
Have heard some positive buzz around WR Jayden Harrison and it seems like maybe he's got his explosiveness back. That might be a wild-card to watch on offense.
RB J.R. Tran-Reno hit the transfer portal. Was not seeing much of a role in practice from what I understand.
DEFENSE
I noticed today that they’re listing Tre Douglas at safety. Not sure when they started doing that but I just noticed and figured I’d pass that on as I’m sure I’m not the other one.
Had completely forgotten about DL Rashaan Wilkins Jr., the JUCO kid they signed. I think he’s maybe got a shot to play and help them.
I’m hearing Alston Orji’s been really good. Maybe it really was the system that held him back.
I’m interested to see what they do with his brother, Anfrernee Orji. His name has come up a lot and I think he’ll be on the field a good deal. Not sure if that’ll be at DB or at a hybrid safety/linebacker spot.
If you’ve wondered, I’ve heard nothing on special teams. I’ll try to ask.
That’s all I’ve got, I’ll keep my ear to the ground.
