Last year, we looked to be set at the tight end position. Then, promising r-Fr. TE Cole Spence was lost for the season with a knee injury and it got pretty bleak. Justin Ball struggled and Logan Kyle, a converted receiver, was inconsistent. True freshman Kamrean Johnson showed flashes but was too light to play inline. This year, the situation looks much better, which is good because TE’s are a huge part of the new scheme Tim Beck and company are running. Cole Spence is back and should be ready to go. His 6’7 frame will be a huge asset on jump balls and he looked like a solid blocker before getting injured last spring. Juco pickup Tyler Fortenberry is an athletic, power blocker who will maul people in the run game and shows potential as a pass catcher. Kamrean Johnson will have had a full season to add weight and strength and should take a big leap. He’s very athletic and if he can become a good blocker, the sky’s the limit for him. Josh Palmer came in as a project last year weighing in at 6’4, 192 pounds and he has now been moved to WR. True freshmen Whitt Edwards and Brycen Coleman are extremely talented, but need to add weight and strength before playing inline. It would not be a surprise to see them get some snaps at receiver however. Overall, the TE position looks well positioned going forward. If Johnson makes a jump this off-season, we could be looking at a really good TE room.
