Pavia named to the Manning Award watch list (Vanderbilt press release)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia has been added to the Manning Award Watch List.

Pavia is one of 14 additions to the list by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, which manages the award. It is presented annually to the nation's top quarterback and is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates’ bowl performances in its balloting.

Pavia has led No. 25/25 Vanderbilt to a 5-2 start, its best since 2008, as well as the program's first top-25 ranking since the end of the 2013 season.

The Albuquerque, New Mexico, native is 12th among FBS quarterbacks in passing efficiency and 19th in yards per completion. He leads SEC quarterbacks with 470 rushing yards and engineered the team's first win in program history over the nation's top-ranked team on Oct. 5 against Alabama.

Pavia has already been named to the Maxwell Award Watch List and at various points chosen as player of the week by the Manning Award, Davey O'Brien Award, Maxwell Award and SEC.

The Commodores hunt for their second top-five victory on Saturday when No. 5/6 Texas visits FirstBank Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:15 p.m. on SEC Network.

Fernando Valenzuela

One of a kind is a description that can be pretty casually tossed out, but Fernando Valenzuela was definitely one of a kind.

I am an old case. Valenzuela was actually younger than me. People tell me confidential information all the time, because they know I cannot remember it. But, I’m pretty sure I recall (most of) this story pretty well.

Anyway, years ago I was listening to this interview with a woman whose first name was Sutton. Don’t recall the reason for her fame as a celebrity, but she was asked how she got her name. She said her dad was a huge Dodgers fan and the day she was born Don Sutton was pitching for the Dodgers. The interviewer said that’s a very interesting story and she said, “That’s nothing, it would have been real interesting if I was born the next day.” When she was asked why she replied, “Because Fernando Valenzuela started that day, and my dad was a huge fan of his.”
