My thoughts on the Wake Forest game

- I'd first like to point out that I was impressed with the fan turnout for Wake Forest in the rain. The crowd was trying to get into it especially early and was a decent atmosphere. With the rain, I was expecting the worst.

- As for the offense, there's no way to get around it, as we all know Mike Wright had a bad day. With the rain, I knew it was going to be a struggle in the passing game to start. The most disappointing part to me was the lack of runs from Mike Wright. I thought he definitely gave the ball on some pull reads. We all know Wright has accuracy issues and is limited in that area. Wright's strength is his legs, and he needs to play to that strength. Yes, Wake accounted for him in the run game, but there were times that he could have pulled the ball and ran. He seemed jittery especially after the big hit. It looked like he was trying to avoid another hit. He can't do that and be successful. Also, he's got to take some shots to either Sheppard or McGowan. The safeties are playing 'option' for the most part with one on one match ups on the outside. He's got to get the ball just in the area of Sheppard and let him do the rest. Wright's shown this ability with the shot play to McGowan against Elon.

- Also for the offense, they need to get Hernandez back. That's nothing against Castillo, but I think he is better suited at guard. As for the running backs, I've felt bad for Davis playing as much as he has the past two games. That's tough and a lot of wear and tear. I like Gillespie, but it is obvious that they don't fully trust him just yet. They need Rocko Griffin and Patrick Smith to return. Multiple running backs allows the offense to play two backs at the same time, which is a plus in the option looks and playaction off of those. I really liked that wrinkle in the Hawaii game, but we haven't seen much of that since due to the lack of running backs.

- As for the defense, I thought they played well for the most part. Wake Forest was solid up front on offense, and Vanderbilt held their own at times. I know the talk on here is getting the defensive line healthy as well as bringing in bigger bodies for the future. Well, Yilanan Ouattara definitely passes the look test. His body screams SEC defensive tackle. I've liked what I've seen from the other young defensive lineman. With the limitations up front defensively, I thought they played well. Offense left them on the field quite a bit and gave Wake some good starting field position. One guy that really stood out defensively to me was transfer Jeremy Lucien. I thought he played well. He gave up the one deep ball and got the defensive PI, but that was pretty much it in the air all day. He showed consistently in the run game as well. I'm a big fan of them adding speed to that side of the ball.

- Now on to Northern Illinois. I've seen several people say they would start Swann this weekend, but I just don't think it is time for that just yet. I could definitely see them spot playing him at times, but I doubt they hand the keys to the car to the true freshman. The staff has been fully supportive of Wright, and I don't think they bench him after one bad performance. That likely wouldn't send a good message to the team. Also if you do that, then you better start benching every other guy that plays one bad game. That isn't going to happen. It's sports, and sometimes players don't play well.

- Vanderbilt's 2-1 on the season and have a chance to start 3-1. After the past three seasons, this is definitely the best football that we've seen out of a Vanderbilt team in a bit, which is saying something about what Lea walked into. I like the talent of the young guys, but we all know the talent isn't there just yet.

I know there are plenty of Titans fans on here...so...

Grew up a Dallas fan, but when Jerry Jones bought the team a fired Tom Landry the way he did....I thought it was time for a change too....but the way he did it. Tom Landry at the time was the only coach Dallas to ever coach the franchise....won multiple Superbowls. Iirc he didn't even tell him in person, Landry came in to his office to find it empty was a major disrespect to him. I was invited to the NFC championship game in Atlanta. The Falcons had Steve Bartkowski, William Andrews Billy White shoes Johnson and a good D. The Falcons were 13-3 that year and I don't remember the Cowboys record but they were a wild card team.
Falcons lead the whole game and Danny White throws a TD as time expires to beat the Falcons and go on to be the first wild card team to win a superbowl.
I went in a Cowboys fan....came out a Falcons fan.

Well, as we all know we have seen Atlanta in Superbowls since then and just haven't been able to win one. But when they acquired Marcus M....I was like....

Crap....

Today he blew the game against NO. They build a nice lead and were driving 26-whatever ....13 I think but driving and around the 15 all he has to do is slide but instead he decides to take on 2 defenders and they poke the ball out and from there they continue to let NO back in to lose last second. The Titans former OC is the HC....and so he knew what he was getting....a guy with some abilities but just does stupid stuff....maybe you Titans fans would take them both back? Boy was HC pissed at MM....boneheaded stupid.

I don't see any hope for this team to be good and our very own Casey Hayward is on the team this year....maybe they should tank the season and get a new coach and a brand new shiny qb in the draft.

.................yikes..............................

This is the real Mike Wright

Mike seems like a great kid, and the team obviously loves him. But he CAN'T THROW. Outside of Northern Illinois, I don't know who else he will be able to run against.

This is why I wanted Seals, because the receivers are a non factor against decent teams with Wright at QB.

We have no more Hawaii's and Elon’s left on the schedule. Those 63 points against Hawaii will feel like they were scored years ago by mid October.

Watching Stanford yesterday…

Looks like they were experimenting with the mesh offense… like Wake their QB has some accuracy which makes it an interesting option variant even for throwing QBs… They were talking about how the QB is taught to read the safety and LBs then decide whether to hand off based on the opponents’ reaction. Pretty stiff offense to defend unless you have DL/LB penetration

SEC DL and OL

. After watching our a defensive line and offensive line pushed around by wake forest, I hope Clark Lee recruits eight big time defensive lineman and offensive lineman. I don’t care how many fast skill players we get, if we can’t get the regular size lineman needed for the SEC we are going to continue to be shit. It’s that simple. Why can’t we did any decent defensive lineman?

Play calling

Is it just me, or has the offensive play calling progressively regressed since the Hawaii game? Did we run the option even once yesterday? Maybe one reverse? Did we set up anything at all, then execute it?

Also, along the same lines as a comment I made yesterday, it doesn’t do us much good to design an offense around a running quarterback if you aren’t going to turn him loose to run. Wright doesn’t need to be looking to slide - he needs to be looking to blaze. That’s why we have back up QB’s. Mike has a unique skill - but the coaches (and/or Mike) have to be willing to use it without reservation.

Reactions: ho-bo and MizM

I just don’t think he’s the answer. .

Yes. it’s very early in the season, but he has no arm and everybody knows it. I hope he makes me eat my words for the rest of the Wake game, but We HAVE to have balance to generate any offensive success. Practicing and moving the football all spring and fall against our defenders was no predictor against good competition . Wake ‘s D is a weak semblance of what we’re gonna see the rest of the year.

Just A Thought

How about a moratorium on name calling and trolling folks in the WR. Seems to me VS contributors are shrinking in numbers. Only Chris can verify that observation. But we need all the folks we can get in the WR to have a vibrant community.

Now if folks want to verbally go at it why not take it to the CS. Many of us have duked it out in there verbally and it doesn't turn off new folks to the site. So having said that my new mantra will be "Take it to the CS" when members get p****. Similar works in bars when patrons are told to take it outside. Just a thought.
