DEFENSE:
- Bryan Longwell, Langston Patterson, and Kane Patterson stood out the most.
- Daveon Walker, Mustafa Dannett, and John Howse had interceptions
- Tyson Russell + Trudell Berry looked much better this week
- Langston Patterson, Alex Brown, and Ted Gregoire
- Bradley Mann had a really impressive TFL

SPECIAL TEAMS:
- Punter Matt Hayball returned after tending to family needs in Australia - he picked up right where he left off, consistently placing punts exactly where the team needs them.
- Jacob Borcila hit a 40-yard FG while Brock Taylor hit a 20-yard FG
- Jayden McGowan returned kickoffs while Will Sheppard returned punts

- Next week will be the final week of fall camp, which will be concluded by a situational (no tackling) scrimmage. Clark Lea said they'll begin some Hawaii prep work later next week. Ladies and gentlemen, we are less than two weeks away. Also, The Plaster Show will be broadcasting live from McGugin after Wednesday's practice - Coach Lea will be on and we're working on securing an interview with AJ Swann.

Football Saturday's practice report (8/12)

- Indoors due to inclement weather + lighter practice, due to tomorrow's scrimmage

- Langston Patterson was everywhere

- AJ Newberry continues to stand out when he gets the chance

- I noticed the defensive backs wore boxing gloves during a few drills and decided to ask Coach Lea about it after practice. He said, "They're frustrated by it, but it allows them to use their feet more. It also prevents holding penalties." Feels like this coaching staff is doing everything in their power to improve cornerback play.

- Junior Sherrill keeps showing out - he's going to make an impact this season

- CJ Taylor was back in pads, but was limited today and will not participate in tomorrow's scrimmage. Coach Lea said Thursday that he could begin a ramp-up period as soon as Monday, though.

- Here were the players I saw returning punts: Will Sheppard, Junior Sherrill, Jayden McGowan, and Martel Hight. I asked Coach Lea if he'd rather not have his best receiver returning punts and he said, "Will is sure-handed and explosive. Right now, that's the type of player we need back there." It'll be interesting to monitor how that shifts, if at all, throughout the season.

- Here were the players I saw returning kickoffs: Jayden McGowan, Chase Gillespie, Will Sheppard, Martel Hight, London Humphries, and Sedrick Alexander

- In my opinion, today solidified that Martel Hight is the best cornerback on the team

- Safety De'Rickey Wright looks much improved - had an interception today

- Kickers Brock Taylor + Jacob Borcila looked very good today

- RB Patrick Smith showed really good hands out of the backfield a couple of times

Football Thursday's practice report (8/10)

-Indoors most of the practice - they went outside for the tail end
-What's the status of Ethan Barr? CCL said: "Ethan's focus is on getting healthy and re-inserting himself as our starting linebacker. What we've done is strengthen the guys that are around him and so now, there's going to be an opportunity to keep him fresh as the year goes and play more people, which is the goal." Langston Patterson has played very well in Ethan's spot (alongside Kane), which makes this situation a little more intriguing.
-Ken Seals was slinging it today. He doesn't have the arm talent Swann does, but I'd say he's one of the better backups in the conference, which is a really good spot to be in if you're Vandy.
-Former wide receiver Daveon Walker switched to No. 16 and is now playing cornerback. I tried watching him closely today. He looks like a receiver that just switched to corner, but he may have to play at that spot this season, especially if injuries occur. He was actually matched up vs. Sheppard occasionally today. Sheppard said, "It's weird, he's been in a white jersey the whole time, but seeing him there, we're just trying to encourage him. It's hard to move from receiver to DB, especially when you've been a receiver you're whole life. We're just trying to be there for him and help him out."
-Patrick Smith is starting to look more explosive
-Junior Sherrill keeps showing out
-AJ Newberry keeps making plays. He's very explosive. They call him "crazy legs" in the running back room.
-Walter Taylor had another BOMB today that was eye-popping
-Martel Hight is everywhere
-Gabe Fisher had a really good block that had Lustig screaming. Don't be surprised if Fisher develops into a solid player down the road for this program.

They'll be off tomorrow and then practice Saturday morning before Sunday's scrimmage, which is closed to the public.
