After rewatching the Texas game

I believe two things cost us the win (in no particular order). (1)(a) Clark’s reluctance to send the blitz in the first half. Showed a lack of confidence, IMO (2)(a) Seddy’s fumble in the second quarter (not really much he could have done about it). Take away the latter, I think we are at a minimum tied at the end of regulation.

Wisner’s success gives me some concerns re Auburn.

That said, I am so impressed with this team. The stands to hold Texas to field goals in the second were epic. Pavia is unbelievable.

Excited for this weekend. I will be there, along with my high school senior and one of his good buddies.

spread the praise around

With all the praise being directed at Coach Beck, Coach Kill and Diego (and deservedly so), I wanted to take a moment to recognize others. I am not as familiar with the roster as many of you so without singling out any individual players, I want to be sure that the players know that each of them has played a significant role in the turn-a-round so far the season. Every unit has shown real improvement. Every player has shown that competitive spirit that has resulted in the success of the team. Every year for as long as I can recall, it has always been said that depth is a real problem area. Well, not this year. Players who are "back-ups" have played an important role and have proven to be more than capable of holding their own. I know many of you have named individual players who have had an impact in certain games and please continue to do that. Anchor Down. Beat Auburn.

A so-called self-proclaimed “part-time Vandy fan” told me yesterday that he can be both a Texas fan AND a Vandy fan. I find this astonishingly stupid because you can only be a fan of one team in a conference, especially one as competitive as the SEC. Am I crazy for thinking this?

Somewhat game observations

Bought tickets via online ticket and sat on 50 yard line near top of East stands.

Glad to have a group of 15-20 Vandy fans around us all cheering loudly for the Dores. There were a smattering of other VU fans in the Texas sections.

Texas fans generally were more pleasant than the obnoxious SEC teams. Though they are a bit arrogant. They have not been exposed to enough good football yet to know the SEC week after week grind.

That high in the stadium you cannot really hear the opposing West stands or even the students. When VU fans come back and fill up the East stands the noise in the stadium for VU will be much louder. I know people sitting on the West stands said they were loud. But, we could hardly hear it in our section.

A few other thoughts on the experience before getting into some football thoughts.

The construction around the stadium is really a mess. The whole stadium exterior on the west and south ends looks trashed. Cannot believe it will be two years for them to finish this work. Then the east stands will undergo construction due to the baseball stadium re-do. So people traffic for that side of the stadium will be messed up for at least 18-24 months I assume.

The congestion on the east stands when it is full is really bad. Concourses under the stands are too small, restrooms too small to accommodate the people, concessions too small and it takes too long to walk through the areas. I wonder why they did not expand the concourse more than they did on the north side next to Memorial Gym. Maybe when the south end zone is completed it will relieve some of the traffic flow under the east stands.

I have to compliment VU on the improved video, music and creating additional energy during the game. This is the best version I have seen.

One other nit, why is the new video board in the south end zone facing the press box and not on top of the roof in the middle of the south end zone so the entire stadium can see it?

I stoppped by the Pavia tailgate as well. It was lit. Many of the football player families were there as well. I do not know who sponsored it, but it was catered, had a DJ and people were having a great time. If Diego is paying for it, then Pavia is a total culture game changer. He is giving his all to VU. VU football has never had a leader like him. He infuses the entire atmosphere with energy, passion, commitment and let’s go kick ass. It is really amazing.

I also sense amongst the student body that they are more into football than I can say in my lifetime. Like they want the football team to do well and VU to have the full SEC football experience like the other big schools. They want that experience, energy and excitement to make their VU experience more fulfilling.

In fact, sitting next to us were two VU graduates who had graduated in the last 5-10 years. One of them has had season tickets for awhile but never went to the games because he said why go when you lose all the time and it is a horrible experience. In fact, he sold his entire season tickets this year before the first game and got more than what he paid for. But, he went to the TX game and enjoyed it and is totally committed to going to the South Carolina game with a bunch of his classmates now. Moving forward, with them winning he will go to games. He says many former students have the same attitude and desire. He thoroughly enjoyed the game even though VU lost. He will be back for more since VU is winning.

VU needs to have more chair back seats to buy at the games. All the Texas fans bought them up 1 hour before kick off.

Eventually, VU needs to re-do the area around Vandyville and make that like a park setting with sidewalks and plazas if that is going to be a tailgate area.

Will be at the South Carolina game.

Can Vandy make the Playoffs at 9-3?

The easy answer is no, they can’t, but…

We are 26th in AP voting and if we win at Auburn, we probably move to #23 or so. We beat Carl’s Jr and probably move to #19 or so. Win at LSU, especially if they beat Bama, and we probably move to #14 or so.

Then, let’s say UTjr is 10-1 or 9-2, we beat them and we very very likely move into the top 10 in the rankings.

The fact that we’re on the radar and would have one of the toughest schedules in the country (we will play 8 top 40 FPI teams), we have a real shot.

Now, I don’t think there is anyway in hell we get to find out but check my logic and let me know what you think?

With all that said, beat Auburn.

Diego Pavia postgame

PAVIA
WHAT”S YOUR EVALUATION OF THE OFFENSE
We’re a good offense
They were in third and long too much and Texas capitalized in that spot
Got to be better first and second downs
Turned the ball over, gotta be better
I’ve gotta be better

TIPPED INT
$HIT happens

DO YOU KNOW EWERS
Yes, he’s big in his faith and that’s something I really like

INJURY
Shoulder got jammed

BEING CLOSE BUT COMING UP SHORT
It sucks
I hate losing more than I love winning
It’s a bad feeling
Everyone in the locker room wanted more
Team deserves more
Wanted to show the fans (a win)

WHAT DID THEY TAKE AWAY/WHAT WERE THEY TRYING
They tried to take away run 1st/end down
On third down ends got wide
They collapsed the pocket
Made it hard for me to run
They have to be better first and second down

PASSING SITUATIONS/ROLL OUTS
That’s the best DL they’ve faced

LAST SCORING DRIVE
We practice those situations

Second nature
If they score those points they go to OT

JUNIOR SHERRILL
He gets overlooked, so does Quincy
You look at his tape and he blocks well and is physical
Likes him one on one

HOW DID HE SEE HIM ON THE TD?
They drew the play up for Eli and they ran a Cover 2 and trapped the boundary
Junior just made a hell of a play, a one-handed catch
I don’t know how he did it

ILLEGAL FORMATION CALL
That was big
Felt the refs messed up on that
But have to move on

REST OF SEASON
The guys want more
They have NFL guys on the team
SEC is different. Games play out as they’re supposed to
They can still be in race

5 WINS WITH 4 TO PLAY, WHAT”S THAT MEAN
It’s the biggest month of his career
Everyone is banged up and has bruises
He wants to be an NFL Draft pick
Wants to prepare like one

ELI STOWERS, DID TX TAKE HIM AWAY
We’re gotta find a way to get him the ball more
Being in the ball in space he makes people miss

HOW DID TEXAS COMPARE TO WHAT THEY’VE SEEN

DL was good. Really, really good
16 on their defense is a walk on he’s a really smart player and a really good kid

WHAT DID IT MEAN TO SEE STUDENTS
It’s great, it put a smile on our faces
but we didn’t give them what they deserved
We’ll keep playing for them

Article: SDS prediction of every SEC teams final record

I hope that they're right about us.

Next year's conference schedule - the same as this year???

The Colorado St thread caused me to stumble across this. I found more than one source stating that every SEC program will play the same SEC opponents next season, but the venues are flipped. So, we will play at Alabama next year? At Texas? At Tennessee? Along with home games against Mizzou and LSU? You got to kidding. Someone please tell me this isn't true.

What about Oklahoma, Miss St, and Florida.

The Gators are as bad as they've been in years, and now we don't get to play them.

I thought the goal was to have Texas and Oklahoma play every SEC team in the first two years of their membership. We play Texas two straight years?

Wow, this really sucks.

Question for Bear

IIRC @Bear8000 was a football ref at one point in addition to being a former player. Here is a question I've had for a long time:

What is the rationale for half the distance to the goal on a penalty? It rewards the team that makes the penalty. If a team near their EZ makes a penalty and the penalty yardage exceeds the yards left, they should take the ball to the 1 inch line or the 1 yard line at minimum.
