What's changed since the loss to South Carolina that led to wins over Kentucky and Florida? "Nothing," says Luke Wyatt, who says this is simply a matter of coach Clark Lea staying the course with his plan all along. Luke and host Chris Lee hit some items from the Florida game, look ahead to the Tennessee game and examine the possibility that nearly every key player has the opportunity to come back next season.

Dear Vandy fans

It’s utjr hate week. We are coming off 2 SEC wins in a row. They don’t have Hooker. They’ve can’t get in the playoff anymore. Their locker room is in shambles. They are playing in OUR house. We have a chance to show our GOLD and cheer Lea’s boys to victory. Tickets are down to $50 now. We NEED to show up. I will be there, and I want you to be there with me. Let us all unite. Anchor tf down.

Way Too Early Observations about SEC Pre-Conference Basketball

Admittedly, we all will have a little better handle about where the SEC fits within the rankings of the top conferences when the Thanksgiving holiday week is over on next Sunday evening, but, how about a few early facts and observations (only my opinion, of course):

  • As of today at 1 PM (EST), the SEC has 46 wins against 12 losses
  • 7 teams remain undefeated and are a collective 28-0; obviously, the remaining 7 teams are 18-12.
  • The conference has played a whopping 6 games . . . 2 wins and 4 losses . . . against Power 5 teams: TN and aTm both lost to Colorado while KY lost to Michigan State and GA was beaten by Wake Forest with uSc chalking up a win over Clemson and Florida beating FSU.
  • If you extend the Power conferences out to include the American and the A-10, then Arkansas beat Fordham, KY beat Duquesne, uSc lost to Davidson (2 of the 3 teams will end up at or near the bottom of the A-10 while Davidson will likely have a "down" year) while the Dores split their two American match-ups with Temple and Memphis . . . from the conference perspective, 3 wins and 2 losses.
  • Of course, Gonzaga from the WCC is now considered a top echelon team and UK was schooled by the Zags last night.
From an early "eye test" perspective, uSc has the least amount of talent, with GA only very slightly above the Cocks talent level. I would argue the Gators massive come from behind win over the Seminoles at Tallahassee is the most impressive win so far for the entire conference; Florida's front court will be a "load" to handle as the season unfolds. although I am not sold on their backcourt yet. Since almost all the SEC teams' wins have come at home against non-Power conference teams, I would say that the Dores win at Temple is the 2nd most impressive win by the entire conference to date which, in a weird way, says something about scheduling to date. Finally, aTm's two losses last week in a tourney set the stage for another "cry fest" from Buzz Williams when (and if) aTm does not make the NCAA tourney again.

UThug Matchup Thoughts

Sitting here by my gate@BNA, waiting to head to Maui for the bday trip my wonderful wife planned back in the summer, but definitely bummed we can’t make the game, as it should be a raucous, electric atmosphere for both teams (but hopefully 60+% Black & Gold).

What a difference two weeks makes. The truly amazing thing about sports is the power of the team over the individual, and Lea & co. have really buttoned it up and executed over the last two weeks. I attribute some of that to the galvanizing effect of Mike Wright, a captain, savoring another starting opportunity after losing his job to someone with years of eligibility on him, but the growth of the D has been something to savor as well.

Trending in the other direction, and on course to pass like ships in the night, are our favorite UThug jumpsuit bearers. While watching the game in Franklin on Saturday, some Brentwood Karen sitting next to me bragged (haughtily) that she was a UTrash fan, as she smugly watched the TCU-Baylor game, just counting the minutes until TCU lost so she could celebrate a UcheaT CFP playoff berth. On a different TV was the Michigan game, where they were losing. As far as any UThugs were concerned, they just needed 1 of 2 to hold so they could start really thumping their chests and celebrating.

…Then the favorites win both on last-second field goals.

(some Orange-clad moron as I was leaving): “Hey, what does Vandy have, almost 5 wins? That’s almost a bowl season.”

Me: “Oh no, it’s fine, we’ll clinch bowl eligibility when we beat Tennessee this week. It’ll be fine.”

Moron: “Stop…”

Then they met Spencer Rattler, and now their playoff hopes are down the drain. The tears I drank from falling asleep listening to the Twitter postgame UTrash podcast was exquisitely delectable.

Anyways, the actual game:

This game will come down to whether Vandy can put real pressure on Milton. It’s clear he’s a very talented player, and he surely learned a ton sitting on the bench and watching Hooker the last two years. He could very well torch Vandy, especially when he has 3 future NFL receivers to throw to.

But I suspect if Howell can apply pressure like he’s been able to do with some measure of success for the last two games, we can have some success here, either through sacks, throwaways, and INT’s. If Vandy wants to win, they’re going to have to win the Turnover Margin.

Really love some of the corner blitzes I’ve seen with Ja’Dais Richard and others. Hit ‘‘em with that.

I also think this is a game (not that we necessarily have much choice, but think this would be a smart game to turn the freshmen loose: Richard, Ugo, Agu, Diakite—this is their chance to show the world who has the best young talent in the state. Free them up for opportunities to flash and make plays, as you can clearly see the energy for it is there.

Anyways, win or lose, it’s going to be a sports-rich week for the ages: USMNT make their Gregg Berhalter debut in the first-ever November World Cup(?), and Vandy has a chance to not only clinch bowl eligibility, but also swap the momentum and trajectory of both programs. Pumped!

Swann sighting?

Did anyone even see AJ on the sidelines Saturday? I couldn't find him, but didn't look super hard. Things got too crazy.

I do wonder if he would be available. I have no issue with Ken playing if needed, but feel at this point and with UTs weak secondary I sure would like to have him as an option.

Remember when N Illinois couldn't stop Shep and we just kept going to him over and over. Want another one of those moments in this game.
