My Problem with Lea in this Game

My problem is his inability to recognize that there was no way the offense was going to be able to run the ball against UT after it was 14 -O. All of us watching in the stands, TV, and the players on the sidelines knew it. Sure, Mike Wright is a good guy but he does not and did not have the tools (passing prowess) to put any pressure on the UT DBs. LEA always talks about putting the players on the field that gives VU the best chance to win. Last night he didn’t. The majority of the board saw how ineffective our run game was very early as UT just loaded the box and dared Wright to throw. LEA started Wright because he won 2 games against completely stylistically different teams in UK and UF. You can not tell me the team was not feeling they had no chance with Wright in the game, but nobody would admit or say it even the coaching staff. Our players are not dumb, they saw it and then LEA tops it off by throwing Swann to the wolves when down by 35 because he finally figured out “we needed to throw to win”. The entire stadium knew that on FRIDAY!!! This is like having an idiot LT telling his platoon to charge the hill even though the enemy is dug in and has superior firepower and manpower. This is why good to great players start questioning the coaches and start seeking the portal and, if very good, money. Last nights coaching, in my opinion, will cost us recruits but even worse players to the portal and if CJ Taylor leaves I understand why. It’s not fun losing by 55 points when your coaches aren’t playing to win.

Is there a psychology or hypothesis around then "This time it's different" posts?

In other words, as homo sapiens we actually have a hardwired negativity bias. Assume the sound in the rustling grass is wind, keep going it's a lion, you don't live to pass on your optimistic genes.

So the monthly "this year will be special" or "this new coach hire is special" "this time is different" posts are always interesting to me. We don't need 300,000 years of evolution to be skeptical. We have a ton of recent data. Any theories? I mean, I get all fan bases d0 this -- which makes me even more curious, but also more puzzled that we see it when they do it yearly and can spot the subjectivity but not in ourselves?

Basketball Taking podcast questions for Kevin Ingram (Thursday morning)

The show is presented by Dr. Jody Jones, DDS.

The guest line is presented by Michael Kendrick of The Kendrick Group. Michael is a local carpenter and a lifelong Vandy fan. He builds bookshelves, cabinets, picture frames, furniture and made-to-order items, including a display case for my prized Dale Murphy jersey. I have seen Michael’s work and he’s a true craftsman. If you’re in the market for custom woodwork, give Michael a call at 615.830.9458.

Today’s mailbag is sponsored by Sutherland & Belk, a family owned injury law firm. If you or a loved one has been hurt in an accident, give Taylor or Russell a call at 615-846-6200 to see what your rights are and if they can help.

We will do this around 10 Thursday morning after the VCU game.

Basketball - Some Observations and Thoughts

As we head into the post-Thanksgiving non-conference schedule, here are my takes on what we have seen so far.

Stackhouse wanted to improve the non-conference schedule and I would say that he has succeeded to some degree in doing so. Of course, you can never be sure how good any one team can be projecting from one year to the next, or in the case of basketball sometimes projecting a few seasons ahead.

So, if we view the non-conference schedule to date through the lens of KenPom, and recognizing that KenPom’s rankings are still evolving relatively early in the season, my own reaction is that the collection of teams played so far have represented an “ok” balance of challenging games coupled with some “creampuffs”:

Against these opponents, we have carved out a few noteworthy statistics (Reminder: 363 D1 Teams):

  • Robbins is 18th in the country in blocked shots;
  • Stute is 32nd in the country in terms of % of made “3’s”;
  • Stute is 38th in the country in terms of # of made “3’s”;
  • The team is 42nd in blocked shots per game:
  • The team is 177th in “3” point shooting % (@33%); and
  • The team is (a woeful) 352nd in free throw % even with “Q” @ 100% from the line!
As many of us have speculated, there was no easy “fix” for losing 21 PPG from one player. So, while we can take some solace that we have received very balanced scoring to date from the starters (NOTE: I know Robbins did not start every game and 2 starters were held out versus Southern Miss, but effectively I view them as starters.), the relatively “low” average . . . 11 points per game . . . of the top 4 in combination with 6 PPG from the PG, absent a microwave scorer off the bench, “screams” that the lack of scoring may be a major Achilles heel for this team:

The ability of the team to put enough points on the board is further punctuated by the disturbing inconsistency among the starters as shown below:

Across 30 opportunities (6 games times 5 players) . . .

  • These players collectively have scored in single digits one-half of the time (perhaps, not surprisingly since the 4 players in double digits only score at an 11 point per game clip);
  • Of note, in almost one-third of the game situations players have scored 5 or fewer points; and
  • Individual players’ low scoring in a single game are unacceptably low in 3 instances (giving Wright a “pass” for his back issues and Manjon a “pass” because that is not his role).

The team collectively averages 12.3 assists per game while turning the ball over at a rate of 12.0 . . . essentially a 1:1 ratio . . . very unimpressive . . . with Manjon @ 3.8 and 1.3, respectively (a 2.9:1 ratio).

So far in this very “young” season, Stute, in my view, has been the most consistent performer based on the combination of his team leading rebounding figure plus his 3-point shooting prowess.

  • Can Stute stay out of foul trouble and maintain the level of play demonstrated so far?
  • Can Robbins play 25-27 minutes per game and keep up his recent stellar play?
  • Assuming Wright’s back is ok, can he become a consistent force and avoid the stark “peaks and valleys" in performance?
  • Can Lawrence show that he has fully turned the corner off some better play out West (although his “D” needs work) and consistently deliver for the Dores?
  • Can Manjon “settle in” to his role as the on-court director of this team and get some support from Lewis (hopefully healthy soon)?

Perhaps, at least for me, a point of observation, albeit it’s very early, is the collective play of the freshmen:

  • Minutes – 218 (200 Minutes = 1 Game)
  • 2 Point Shooting – 8 for 23, or 34.8%
  • 3 Point Shooting – 11 for 35, or 31.4%
  • FT Shooting – 7 for 17, or 41.1%
  • Rebounds – 41
  • Blocks – 5
  • Assists – 10
  • Turnovers – 9
  • Steals – 1
Can someone(s) among the frosh emerge here and become a reliable and efficient scorer as among the upperclassmen “Q” won’t deliver the offensive punch off the bench (and to have “Q” start the game puts us in the hole offensively, in my view) nor will Ansong who, at best, gives us another strong body who can rebound a little (but that’s it) off the pine?

Blackman (Tenn.) 2025 ATH Ethan Carson recaps Vanderbilt visit

Blackman (Tenn.) 2025 athlete Ethan Carson was another in-state recruitment target that stopped by Vanderbilt this past weekend for a gameday visit, catching rivalry week between the Commodores and the Volunteers.

Carson received an invite to Vanderbilt's showdown with Tennessee, announcing the opportunity and thanking the Commodores' coaching staff over social media on Wednesday, Nov. 23.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound wide receiver and strong safety out of Murfreesboro, Tennessee spoke with VandySportsDotCom about his gameday visit to West End, detailing his overall experience and favorite moment.

"I had an awesome time yesterday, I look forward to coming back again," Carson said. "The atmosphere all around was great. The star walk was amazing with all the fans cheering and band playing, it was a hype atmosphere. My favorite moment was how loud the crowd was when they announced Ray Davis breaking 1,000 yards rushing."

Carson, who said he was at West End a few weeks back to watch the Wake Forest game, said that the Commodores haven't been involved with his recruitment directly due to him being a 2025 recruit. Carson added that Vanderbilt has been expressing interest in him through his coaches at Blackman High School.

"I went to the Vandy vs. Wake Forest game a few weeks ago," Carson said. "I haven't directly texted any coaches since I'm a still a 2025, but they have been in contact with my high school coaches."

During the SEC showdown between Tennessee and Vanderbilt, Carson said that despite the Commodores' offensive struggles, wide receiver Will Sheppard stood out to him as he showed great effort and athleticism.

"Vandy's receiver Will Sheppard," Carson said. "He made an incredible play on the ball and gave great effort. Even though they ruled it incomplete, it was a great overall play."

Ensworth (Tenn.) 2025 LB Sam Haley recaps Vanderbilt visit

Ensworth (Tenn.) 2025 linebacker Sam Haley was another intriguing in-state talent that stopped by West End this past weekend to visit with Vanderbilt, catching the Commodores in action against in-state rival and SEC foe Tennessee.

Haley announced he was going to be back at Vanderbilt for a gameday visit over social media on Friday, Nov. 25.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound recruit out of Nashville, Tennessee spoke with VandySportsDotCom about how it felt to catch the Commodores' final regular season and detailed his favorite moments from his gameday visit to West End.

"I had a great time yesterday at Vanderbilt, the environment was awesome," Haley said. "One of my favorite moments was walking through the tunnel and seeing the players from the sidelines."

Haley said that Vanderbilt has been involved with his recruitment since this past summer when he received an invite to one of the Commodores' camps. He said that he connected with several of Vanderbilt's coaches. Haley said he talked with assistant coach and linebackers coach Nick Lezynski, director of recruiting Nik Valdiserri and defensive coordinator Nick Howell during his recruitment with the Commodores.

"It started this summer when I got invited to a camp," Haley said. "I've been able to talk with Coach Lezynski, Coach Valdiserri and Coach Howell."

Despite the 56-0 loss to Tennessee, Haley said that Vanderbilt linebacker Kane Patterson stood out to him during the game, adding that watching the Commodores' players in action helps him to grow as a player.

"I definitely liked watching Kane Patterson," Haley said. "I always love watching the players closely and using some of the things I see used by the players."

In addition to the interest Haley has garnered from Vanderbilt, he's also attracted attention from another SEC program in South Carolina, picking up an offer from the Gamecocks this past summer on June 18.

JMHO CCL is ahead of schedule

First year was brutal. We were not even close. Recruiting was decent for our standards however. This season I expected 3-9 with no SEC wins. We won at UK who was ranked and beat a Florida team that smoked South Carolina and should have beaten FSU. I am considering Mason won 2 SEC games his second year. Mason's smartest move was hiring Ludwig. The schedule sets up for us to make some noise to start the year, 6-0 to start, 0-6 to finish. I think we will see a bowl game next year and will have a fight to keep CCL. All is all Im pretty pleased with where we are as a program versus where we were.

Request for Chris and Sean

Chris, I know you and Luke are planning to do an in-depth roster review on the next podcast. I’m very interested to hear your takes on the redshirt seniors, seniors, and other transfer candidates.

Sean, can you do a similar overview for recruiting as well? The number we take depends on attrition and graduation. If it is best to wait a week to allow for the year-in-review conversations between coaches and players (where we start to see portal entries shortly thereafter), that’s fine. I’m interested in total numbers, potential decommitments, the remaining scholarships by position, and categories of targets (likely, possible, long shots, etc.).

I know these take time, and situations are fluid. Roster composition is such an important of the rebuild that I’m sure many of us are your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

Baseball Schedule for Dallas Tournament

For those who are looking forward to the start of baseball season, I just noticed that the schedule has been posted for the opening weekend tournament in Dallas (Feb 17th - 19th) at Globe Life Field. VandyBoys play TCU at 3:00 on Friday afternoon, Oklahoma State at 11:00 on Saturday morning and Texas at 10:30 Sunday morning. The website says tickets will go on sale "this fall." However, there are a couple of ticket brokers that are now selling tickets.
