Football Tennessean article on Jimmy Wiliams

I don’t subscribe to The Tennessean.

However, this is an excellent article written by Aria Gerson after the passing of Jimmy Williams.

If you missed it when it was published, it is worth a read.

FB Recruiting John Wayne Oliver update

Can Vanderbilt keep the CPA pipeline going? They are making a strong push for the talented OL in the 2024 class

Baseball Coming up: the baseball preview series. And here's a few spoiler alerts.

I'm writing the starting pitching portion as we speak and will have that up first.

- My guess as to the order of the rotation: Holton, Owen, Hliboki with Dutkanych getting the first mid-week start.
- The closing role seems unsettled. It could be Schultz, it could be Maldonado, it might even be Grayson Moore. Maldonado could be the "Swiss Army knife," meaning he'll pitch in lots of spots depending on when needed.
- The lineup is far from settled. An early guess at what that could look like, with the batting order
1. Bradfield, CF
2. Polk, LF
3. Vastine, SS (he seems to be the biggest riser of all the hitters)
4. Schreck, DH
5. Noland, 1B (had a good spring)
6. Austin, 2B
7. Diaz, 3B
8. Bulger, C
9. Hewett, RF

The chance I nailed everything there in both batting order (and maybe even positions) is near-zero. They have variability almost everywhere except in center. It's possible Espinal catches. I think I have the four infielders but whether that's where they all open, nobody seems sure. Corner outfield is a question and you could see T.J. McKenzie out there too.

Anyway, more details coming as I roll these out but feel free to ask questions too.

Audio PODCAST: Lawrence, Vandy sink Vols; baseball lineup talk

Vanderbilt's Tyrin Lawrence just beat the buzzer with a 3-pointer, leading the Commodores' massive upset over Tennessee. Also, coach Jerry Stackhouse leaned more on his veterans with small decisions that had significant results towards a win. Finally, Chris Lee and Andrew Allegretta take a stab at Vandy's Opening Day baseball lineup.

FB Recruiting Jesse Perry update

Another local 2024 OL that Vandy has made a great impression on (along with John Wayne Oliver, Ronan O'Connell, and Luke Masterson). Perry talks about his recent visits, Vandy included, and what lies ahead in the spring. He plans to take officials in the summer and be committed by July. Tennessee just offered him today.

Basketball Fans Rushing the Court/Field Solution

Personally, I think the SEC rule regarding fans rushing the court is a joke. The fine(s) are too high and do not "re-set" each year. Additionally, if there is a violation for basketball then a second violation in another sport triggers an additional fine. The SEC is the only conference that does this. While I realize that player safety (mainly the safety of the opposing team) is paramount there HAS to be a better way to accomplish this.

15-20 security guards/ushers cannot hold back 500 students - it is not practical. There is nothing Vanderbilt University could have done better than they did last night and they still will get fined.

A simple solution would be to take those 15-20 ushers and have them immediately surround/encircle the opposing team and usher them off the field/court/whatever. If after doing this the violating school is deemed to have not adequately protected the opposing team then the school gets fined. Let the kids have fun, protect the other team and coaches, and end this BS.

Basketball Press release: Vanderbilt fined for storming the court

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (February 10, 2023) – The Southeastern Conference announced today that Vanderbilt University will be fined for a violation of the league’s access to competition area policy due to fans entering the court following its men’s basketball game against the University of Tennessee on February 8.

Vanderbilt will incur a fine of $250,000 for a fourth offense under the league’s access to competition area policy. Vanderbilt was last fined for a violation following its football game against Florida during the 2022 season.

Fines levied against schools for violation of the access to competition area policy are deposited into the SEC Post-Graduate Scholarship Fund.

The policy states that “access to competition areas shall be limited to participating student-athletes, coaches, officials, support personnel and properly-credentialed individuals at all times. For the safety of participants and spectators alike, at no time before, during or after a contest shall spectators be permitted to enter the competition area. It is the responsibility of each member institution to implement procedures to ensure compliance with this policy.”

Financial penalties are imposed for violations in all sports sponsored by the Conference. Institutional penalties range from $50,000 for a first offense to fines of up to $100,000 for a second offense and up to $250,000 for a third and subsequent offenses. The policy was originally adopted by a vote of Conference members in 2004 and financial penalties were increased by action taken by the membership during the 2015 SEC Spring Meetings.

The SEC announced in November that a Conference working group on event security will review and update policies intended to address post-game spectator incursion on competition fields and courts in the SEC with any new regulations to be implemented for the 2023-24 athletic year.

Just watched the replay

I was listening to the game intermittently last night due to a prior commitment. I just finished watching the replay. I used to think Frank Seckar was the most underrated Vandy player in the modern era…now I think it might be Liam Robbins. He is a star. Manjon was great as well he is a real talent. His final pass was extraordinary and the sheer timing wow. Rick Barnes is kind of a blowhard but is a heck of a coach.
