Podcast on Whit Muschamp

Starts at the 16:30 mark. They talk about Whit Muschamp, Jeremy St-Hilaire, Callahan Blair, and speak highly of Clark and Barton. Great listen

Example of how poor of a job committee did this year - unreal really how VU got ......

Pitt lost 7 games to team not in the tourney
Nevada lost 6 games to non tourney teams
AZ St lost 5 games to non tourney teams (and this is giving them credit for losing to 12-20 TX Southern, who made the tourney by beating, yea, Grambling, if TXSouth loses that game this goes up to 6)
NC ST lost 4 games to non tourney teams
VU lost games to 3 non tourney teams

VU had 7 wins vs tourney teams (all at large)
Pitt had 4 wins
NC ST had 2 wins
Nevada had 4 wins (Grand Canyon was one of those, other 3 those MW teams)
AZ ST had 4 wins

Just some examples. Now , some of this would change if like Pitt didn't make it and VU did, as Pitt wouldn't be a tourney team so you take that win away, but, hey, head to head ha. NC ST now would make those look better, but they only had 2 wins to begin with, geeez.

And I've heard the nay sayers on the board say , well, you can't lose to bad teams, umm, these other teams looks like lost to more bad teams than VU did and still got in.

Audio PODCAST: NCAA hoops snub, hitting struggles, more

Vanderbilt missed the NCAA basketball tournament; was the snub justified? Chris Lee and Luke Wyatt look at the Commodores' case for inclusion and offer theories on why it didn't resonate with the selection committee. Also, the Commodores' hitting continues to get worse as the schedule has gotten easier; what's behind that, and is that unfairly obscuring some outstanding pitching? Plus, a long discussion of computers vs. humans for both baseball and basketball.

Myles Stute - Requiem (Latin for "A Mass for the Dead")

I could not let yesterday's news go by absent one final post:

Here are Stute's season numbers from "3":

  • All Games: 74-205, or 36.1.%
  • SEC Home Games: 15-49, or 30.6%
  • SEC Away Games: 17-54, or 31.5%
  • SEC Tourney (Neutral Site) Games: 2-17, or 11.8%
  • All SEC Games: 34-120 or 28.3%
  • Non-Conference Home Games: 16-45, 35.5%
  • Non-Conference Away Games: 13-19, 68.4%
  • Non-Conference Neutral Site Games: 11-21, or 52.4%
  • All Non-Conference Games: 40-85, or 47.1%
  • All Home Games: 31-94, or 33.0%
  • All Away Games: 30-73, or 41.1%
  • All Neutral Site Games: 13-38, or 34.2%
  • All Non-Memorial Gym Games: 43-111, or 38.7%
In my view, his extended slump at the end of the season, inclusive of the SEC Tourney, combined with his body language (fairly or unfairly interpreted by many of us) plus, generally, an unwillingness to get on the floor after loose balls, clearly signaled that something was really "off", or "broken" (more than his shot), with Myles. As much as Myles could have been an asset to the Dores next year if, and only if, he had returned to a 42%-44% shooter from deep, coupled with a change in attitude, I don't believe that that was in any way a realistic expectation.

Not sure if this makes you feel better or worse, but....

I was just listening to the Greg Pogue show, and he had a professional sports better (I forget his name) on the show, talking about betting lines on the NCAAT.

Pogue asked him about Vanderbilt not getting in, even though they were one of the hottest teams in the country at the end of the year. He said, "they were playing very well, and was one of the best teams in the country right now. I would have them favored over probably 15 at large teams right now. But, the selection process is based on what you did all season, and they didn't do enough in November and December."

That pretty much says it all.

Two coach analysis articles coming this week

I was able to catch up with the quarterback commits' head coaches yesterday, and I'll have those interviews out later this week. I just wanted to share the college comparisons that each coach made for their prospects. McCallie coach Ralph Potter compared Jeremy St-Hillaire's skill set to Kentucky's Will Levis. Baylor coach Eril Kimrey compared Whit Muschamp's skill set to former South Carolina QB Connor Shaw. Of course they weren't saying that they will turn into each, but that is who each mentioned as similar types. I didn't ask either to make a comparison either, but they both put one out there.
