Michigan - "The Game"

About the "game" . . ..what say you?

  • The Wolverines shoot "3's" at a 34.6% clip (Let's hope the UM players do not "love" the sightlines within Memorial Gym.);
  • Common Opponents: Beat Pitt by 31 and lost to UK by 4 (Yes, I know the transitive property does not apply to athletics.);
  • Dickenson at 7'1" 265 pounds will be a load for the Dores to match up with . . . another post-Robbins challenge . . . think someone who averages 1 more point per game, 1.5 more rebounds per game but 1.7 fewer blocks per game and shoots 8% point higher from "3" than Robbins;
  • UM's two guards . . . a freshman and a sophomore . . . are almost mirror images of Manjon (yes, quick and undersized like Filet) and Lawrence (yes, even a left hander with an eerily similar game to Tyrin) . . . let's hope our experience gives us a slight edge here; and
  • if, and that's a big if, we can not get crushed at the center position, then the play of the forwards will be key, although like so many college teams, UM plays three guards a lot . . . got to avoid Joey Baker going off for more than 20 like he did versus Toledo and Wright must have a better game than he did versus Yale or we will be "toast";
  • neither team has an advantage off the bench, in my view, as UM's contributors are primarily role player types similar to VU's.
I don't have a good feeling about this one because a performance similar to that versus Yale will get us a loss, e.g., too many turnovers, too many near turnovers, too much reliance on Ezra and Tyrin, very little from the bench.

Talking about Steak and Sauce (Manjon and Lawrence) made me think what are the best one two punch I’ve seen since I’ve watched Vandy hoops. Tough choice.

Basketball Us making the tournament next year is dependent on…

The off-season and the “preseason”. We know that Jerry has teams playing well once they get late in the season, but they’re gonna need to take care of things before that if they want to make the tournament. This year’s team was maybe a piece away from being a sure tournament team(Keonte Kennedy). But they were definitely playing like a tournament team when they had the 3 headed monster of Robbins-Lawrence-Manjon and then late season version of Wright plus Lawrence and Manjon.

We’re getting Lawrence and Manjon back, but they’re either gonna need Jordan to come back and play well all season, or go get an impact transfer who can do that. Either way they need to have a good offseason. If they only have a spot or two, gonna need to prioritize the portal, if they have a few, taking a HS guy isn’t the worst move.

Then they’re gonna need to go have a good non conference run. It’s clear that if you have a good amount of wins with a couple quality ones thrown in there it’s gonna be enough. They need to go at least 9-4 or 10-3 in the pre conference portion

I really think those two things (along with a run to LV right now in the NIT) are key for the fanbase. Jerry won back a lot of the fanbase with the late season run (evident with the good attendance late and the general attitude of the board). But that could dissipate quickly if they have a poor offseason, but especially if they have a poor non-conference run.
