Football Tuesday's practice report

I was there for all of practice today. Players were in shells and so there was no hitting and such and it makes it harder to evaluate, but here’s what stood out to me today.

  • DL Devin Lee seemed more active and productive today (or I just hadn’t noticed before—which is possible). Lee got what probably would have been a couple of sacks, though I’d classify that as a coverage sack. We talked to DL coach Larry Black after practice and Lee was a topic and you can hear how pleased he’s been with Lee’s effort.
  • Black also talked about DE Darren Agu and how happy he is with his progress. Agu has moved from the star position and is now a true defensive end and they’re hoping they can get some pass-rush production from him there. Black is also pleased with his progress and said that he’s about 255 currently and they’d ideally like to see him around 270.
  • CB Tyson Russell had a pick in one-on-one drills on a deep ball, I don’t remember who the QB was.
  • S Savion Riley picked QB Ken Seals in an 11-on-11 situation and returned it a few yards. Riley seems like a guy who’s maybe making a move on earning more playing time but S John Howse has also been out all/most of the spring and so I’m not sure what the situation is here.
  • This isn’t “reporting” but I can’t remember Seals throwing a pick all camp until today. I’ve not been at every practice but I’ve been at most. He and QB Drew Dickey have been fairly accurate and I feel like the backup QB situation is the best it’s been in a long time, at least based on what I’ve seen from them in practice. QB Walter Taylor also has obvious physical ability and a really strong arm but is behind the other two.
  • WR Will Sheppard has had his workload monitored most of camp and wasn’t participating much today. Same with WR Jayden McGowan and I don’t remember WR Daevon Walker being out there (or being a factor) today. So with that, WR Quincy Skinner probably had the best day of the scholarship wideouts and certainly turned in some nice plays.
  • I continue to be shocked at how productive the walk-on group here has been. WR Landon Wells, WR Richie Hoskins, WR Wilson Long and WR Hutch Baird have all had their moments in camp.
  • Again, it’s not been a super-strong camp for the running backs but RB Sedrick Alexander has started to flash some solid runs here and there.
  • Notables not participating today included LB Kane Patterson and OL Jake Ketschek, the latter of whom is obviously going to be out a long time.
  • Saw several recruits there including local LB target Crews Law from CPA.
  • There’s a practice Thursday that I’ll cover and a practice Friday (which is basically a walk-through for the spring game) that I won’t. On Saturday, I’ll be there and may be joined by Justin Angel and Joey Dwyer depending on schedules.

FB Recruiting Recruiting tidbits

- Davidson Academy's Glenn Seabrooks visited Vanderbilt for a spring practice last week. I caught up with the local defensive lineman, and he was impressed with the Commodores. I asked when he planned to make a commitment and his response was: "Maybe in the next couple of weeks". He said that Vanderbilt is the school sticking out in his recruitment, and he has no plans to visit other schools. He is a take for Vanderbilt. With that being said, I put in a futurecast for Seabrooks to Vanderbilt.

- Sticking with local defensive lineman, Brentwood Academy's Hank Weber visited Vanderbilt last week as well, and he got plenty of attention from the Commodore coaching staff. Weber has been to Vanderbilt several times, and we were told that this is shaping up to be a Vanderbilt-North Carolina battle. We've been hearing some positive vibes around Vanderbilt, but North Carolina did just beat out the Commodores for local offensive lineman Luke Masterson.

- With Masterson choosing North Carolina, Vanderbilt offered a 6-foot-8 offensive tackle from Denton in Hayden Gunter. He visited Vanderbilt last week, and he is interested in the Commodore program. I should have a story out on him soon. He's a high academic prospect that also excels on the basketball court.

- Also as was reported on here, Vanderbilt got another visit from CPA offensive tackle John Wayne Oliver on Saturday. The 4-star prospect is a national prospect, but the Commodores continue to get him on campus which is always a good thing. Vanderbilt also sits in a great spot with offensive tackle Matty Augustine.

- Maryland ATH and Vanderbilt target Brycen Coleman plans to visit Vanderbilt tomorrow. Vanderbilt likes him as a tight end.

WSJ: Nashville #1 Job Market in US

The article is behind a pay wall and requires a subscription:

But this is a tremendous endorsement of the economic reality underlying the growth of middle Tennessee. I had the poor luck to graduate just before all the explosive growth started to happen, post-Financial Meltdown. I'm c/o 2008, and I bet if I were c/o 2012 or 2014, I would still be living in Nashville now and would have had season tickets to Vandy football, basketball and baseball along with the Titans, the Preds and Nashville SC (because I'm a glutton for punishment lol).

Can those of you who are local to Nashville, can you discuss the growth of the region, the job opportunities and the influx of gaijin into the area? We can connect it to our beloved Vanderbilt by talking about the tremendous opportunity the administration has to connect Vandy sports to the local fanbase.

Off topic OT: My Facebook account got hacked

Several of you are friends with me so if you notice anything out of character there, that's what's going on. I'm having an awful time trying to regain control of the account, whoever took it lives in Australia and must have harassed or spammed a bunch of people because when I try to get the account back by submitting ID, I get a message that says I'm not allowed to post for a certain amount of time to protect against spam.

If anyone here works at Facebook or has an inside track on helping me get this back, help would be appreciated.

Iowa takes down undefeated South Carolina in WBB

Just watched the Iowa Hawkeyes beat South Carolina to make their first ever national championship game. Caitlin Clark was phenomenal with 41 points and 8 assists, and ice in her veins as she was 4/4 on key free throws in the final minutes. Hope to see Iowa beat Kim Mulkey and LSU on Sunday for the national championship.
