Football Wednesday's practice thoughts

WEDNESDAY, August 9 (practice No. 12)
The team practiced outside today, it wasn’t unbearably hot today and there was some cloud cover. There was a good bit of scrimmage work. Here are some thoughts, some specific today and some specific to what I’ve seen in camp.

Darren Agu has a dislocated elbow, but it’s not as severe as feared.
Coach Clark Lea
talked about DE Darren Agu’s injury today; it was a dislocated elbow and sounds as if it’ll just be a matter of swelling going down and healing, and there isn’t a fear it’ll cause him to miss a ton of time. I asked Lea who he expected back earlier, Agu or DL Christian James; you can see it for yourself on the video but Lea didn’t much hesitate and said Agu would be back sooner. To me that’s terrific news because, while I think James will miss some games, I’m not sure it’ll be many.

How would they replace Agu?
I talked to a team source in addition to asking Lea about this today. In practice, Alex Brown has been getting a lot of reps at that spot, but, I’m pretty sure that wouldn’t be “Plan A.” James would obviously play there if healthy. I have Linus Zunk listed as the backup there but I’m not totally confident in that. Yilanan Outtara’s name came up a couple of times and my guess is he’d be the starter there, but I don’t say that with complete confidence. Bradley Mann would be an option and Brayden Bapst would be also.

The Jayden McGowan/Junior Sherrill battle in the slot
I think it’s safe to say these are the two best options, and I’m not sure which is the best at the moment. We got a video of McGowan’s interview; he alluded to a hip injury that required January surgery of which I was unaware and then hurt his hamstring in the spring. McGowan’s production dropped off dramatically in the second half, and he said “I should have taken that way more seriously.” I always look for reasons if performance changes, and so maybe we have an explanation there. McGowan has talked about ball security being a point of emphasis too; that was a problem last year.
Sherrill has gotten more reps than McGowan and presumably McGowan’s injury has something to do with that. Comparing the two, I’d say McGowan is faster, but not by a ton, and Sherrill is the more polished football player at this point. I think McGowan will likely enter the fall as the starter but I’m not sure it’s a given, and this is a terrific issue to have because I think Sherrill can be a significant help right now too, and probably will be.

Running back battles
I would handicap it this way: 1 Patrick Smith, 2. Sedrick Alexander, 3. Chase Gillespie, 4. AJ Newberry, 5. Deago Benson, 6. Dylan Betts-Pauley.
IMO, Alexander has the biggest upside of the group, with Newberry probably coming next. Benson just hasn’t made a big splash when I’ve watched but admittedly I need to hone in on him a little more. I’d still handicap Smith as the guy to win the job due to experience and the fact that, while he’s still not what I’d want as by RB1 in the SEC, he’s been markedly better than he was last fall and this spring, also.

This and that:
- Freshman LB Bryan Longwell continues to make some plays here and there. I don’t see a huge role for him this year unless it’s special teams, but with some of these late signees, it’s a dart-throw that doesn’t work out more often than it does. To me, Longwell looks like more of a keeper.
- Some housekeeping notes on freshmen OL: Cooper Starks got some reserve reps at right guard today; I don’t think I’ve written about him all camp. Anthony Miles has been out but last I checked, they were using him at left tackle, which is also where I’ve seen Barrett Maddox playing some. Misael Sandoval has seen a little time at RT. I don’t expect any of those guys to play this year based on camp but could be wrong.
- Lea was asked about LB Prince Kollie and while he wouldn’t go into the situation, sounded optimistic that he’d contribute this year. So that would be good news.
- Anchor CJ Taylor is still out but as Lea said Saturday, he's among a group of guys who'd be playing if it were game week. S Jaylen Mahoney got a lot of reps today. I can't recall seeing S De'Rickey Wright out there today but he did play yesterday.
- I have no idea whether Jeffrey Ugo or Steven Sannienola play any time soon. I’m not sure either has played in camp and if they have, it’s been so long I’ve forgotten.
- To that last item: Nobody has benefitted more from others being out that S Savion Riley, who continues to make plays about every day. I still think Riley is a backup if everyone’s healthy but I like what he’s shown and I bet he’ll be a starter this time next year.
- St. Paul Christian’s football team was here today, and Lea spent some time greeting that team and welcoming it to campus.

Football Went By The Stadium Today…

The scale of the construction currently is really something to see. If I knew how I would post a shot from up by McGugin looking towards the field.

I will also say that while I’m sure there is a plan in place I really hope it’s a good one they rehearse as much as possible before gameday. I’m sure it’s concern about nothing but I can easily see after being there today getting in and out against Hawaii being an epic cluster

Football Ten thoughts from fall camp (Tuesday)

TUESDAY, AUGUST 8 (practice #11)

Some general thoughts on what I saw today and how that connects with some other things that have happened in camp
1. DE Darren Agu left the field today and appeared to be hurt and now we’ll just wait and see on the severity. This would be a pretty huge development because that’s one of the positions where I don’t think there was much debate about whether he was starting there or not. Their backups, IMO, would be DE Linus Zunk and DE Brayden Bapst, probably in that order, though I think Bapst has probably stood out a bit more in camp, so perhaps not. Alex Brown could also see some time in that spot and I saw Ted Gregoire, who’s listed at 6-3, 311 and is every bit of both, also playing some at that spot today. (Haven’t talked much about Gregoire, but physically he’s impressive and has played inside more so far.)

2. WR Daevon Walker moved to corner in mid-practice today. Walker started slowly in camp, played well in the middle part and has been less of a factor lately. The move comes at a time where Vanderbilt lacks much in the way of proven options at corner, but I can’t help but think the fast rise of both WR Logan Humphries and WR Junior Sherrill had a part in this. I keep my own depth chart estimate after every practice and when things seem “tied” I usually lean in the direction of the veteran, but Humphries had clearly been so much better than Walker that I had slotted him ahead of Walker before the move.

3. It’s fall camp and that comes with the usual caveats since there hasn’t been much actual tackling, and sometimes guys are going against walk-ons and such. But after 20 years of doing this, I’m not sure I’ve seen a freshman receiver that at this stage of camp has been better than either of these guys. Humphries can take a top off a defense in a way nobody else on the roster can, and I’m unsure if Sherrill’s being more of a factor is part of the “let’s see what the new toys look like!” Phase of camp (McGowan’s been in the program a year, he’s presumably the starter and they know what he can and can’t do) or a sign that that job is up for grabs.

4. Safeties Jaylen Mahoney and De’Rickey Wright got back on the field some today and funny, it wasn’t quite the track meet it had been in other practices with those two out.
5. I would not count out WR Richie Hoskins making a contribution. He makes nice plays basically every single day and had also done more than Walker.

6. Defensive coordinator Nick Howell confirmed that Bryce Cowan is now playing “anchor,” which tracks with what my eyes had told me. (Earlier, they’d said he was still a linebacker, IIRC, even though I’d seen him mostly at anchor.) I’m not going to say that Cowan is having the camp that CJ Taylor had last year, but he’s been pretty good. This seems like one of those “find a way to get your best athletes on the field” moves. The fact that Jeffrey Ugochukwu has been out almost all of camp (if not all of it) has certainly allowed Cowan to see more time, too.

7. I’ve got Kane Patterson and Langton Patterson penciled in as my starting linebackers for now. I love the way both have played in camp. Both have been all over the field and both may be answers to the “how does Vanderbilt generate more pass-rush?” question. Ethan Barr (who’s been held out recently) will have a say in whether Langston starts or not but if they’re going in favor of athleticism and play-making ability then I think they need to go with the younger player there.

8. After those three, the depth situation at LB is getting dicey. Errington Truesdell is there but hasn’t had a rep all camp. Prince Kollie hasn’t taken many reps and was out there today but not participating in drills or scrimmage reps and I’m starting to wonder about his availability. My guess is that Nick Rinaldi would be poised to see a bump in playing time if some of these situations don’t resolve.

9. It still seems up on the air as to who’ll start at corner. My guess it it’ll be BJ Anderson at one and one of Martell Hight, Tyson Russell or Truedell Berry at the other. Hight is easily the most gifted corner on the roster, probably followed by Berry, but how ready are they? Corner isn’t just about ability, otherwise, you wouldn’t see future NFL first-rounders get burned so often as freshmen, but that’s part of it. I guess they could go Hight and Berry but I’d be surprised if they did, and it feels like Anderson at least offers some steadiness there.

10. Not sure where the kicking battle stands. Special teams coordinator Justin Lustig said it was a three-man competition and mentioned Jacob Borcilla, Will Farris and Brock Taylor as candidates.

Basketball Stack availability

Jerry Stackhouse will talk tomorrow at 1 pm for the first time of the 2023-24 season, I tried my best to figure out a way to get there but I'm on family vacation and my dorm hasn't opened yet in Nashville so the plan is for Chris to be there. I'll have a three quick takes story and a rapid reaction out shortly after the presser is posted.
