Are we rioting if Byington is Candice’s choice?

I alluded to this during the basketball season but I know a guy who knows a guy who will burn anything down for $500 (pre inflation number, so possibly $1,500 now).

No way this is the guy we’re hiring, right?

Thoughts?

FB Recruiting ***PRIORITY TARGET TRISTAN NORMAN RETURNS TO VANDY***

Vanderbilt now has some stiff competition for the rising 2025 WR, but are hoping their long-standing relationship will lead to a commitment. Norman details his weekend return visit to Vandy and talking with new OC Tim Beck

What coaches are left?

So, who is left? This is what we have heard and can be verified in terms of interest between coach and school.

May - Michigan
Schertz - Louisville
Smith - Stanford
Sprinkle - Washington
AAR - zero interest in VU thankfully

Mack
McMillian
Kelsey (was a candidate at Louisville)

Lower tier:
Casey Alexander
Mitch Henderson

So, here's the big problem staring at VU: what happens with Cal?

If Cal is fired, how does that affect other coaches and the dominoes that may fall?

Nate Oates? Who replaces Nate Oates?
Scott Drew? Who replaces Scott Drew?
Mark Pope? BYU - not a huge program, so not worried about our candidates.
Bruce Pearl? Who replaces Pearl at Auburn?
Billy Donovan? (no dominoes)

I think Vanderbilt would do well to get a coach in place as soon as possible - even today - before other dominoes start to fall as a result of Cal getting fired.

Quick Saturday night search update

Vanderbilt was one of three schools, along with Michigan and Louisville, that sent a term sheet to Dusty May. May has taken Michigan (and apparently left Louisville thinking it was getting him). Always thought this would be a tough get but hey, I applaud them for trying.

There seems to be a sentiment the hire is Chris Mack. I don't have enough to say it definitively. Based on the info I had 3-4 days ago (and it came from a credible place) it seemed obvious that Mack was either out of it or being slow-played. I guess we are about to find out.

I know they had not been in contact with Bucky McMillan as of a couple of days ago. Got a little info tonight that makes me back off that claim with less certainty within the last 48 hours or so (and contact would have been recent), but I'm nowhere sure about it.

Anyway, that's what I've got right now.

Chris Mack or Bucky McMillan - right?

Yesterday, we had a lot of Vandy fans happy that we tried to get Dusty May and lost. People were saying, “At least we were swinging for the fences.”

I have a different take. If we waited on May, got played and that hurt our chances with other coaches, I think it was idiotic. Of course, we won’t know until we finally land a coach.

We’re on our 11th day without a basketball coach, which isn’t the end of the world but our confidence in the competency of Vanderbilt is low, so we’re all starting to get a little nervous. I continue to hear that Chris Mack isn’t coming to VU at this point (@NashNative615 thinks otherwise) and if that is the case, most of us know where to go.

I honestly think, of the names we are familiar with that are realistic, only Chris Mack and Bucky McMillan would excite the fanbase. Winning is really the only thing that matters but if we hire somebody that is exciting to the fans, it will help get fans back into Memorial Gym quicker (and a good home court advantage will help us win quicker).

To be clear, I’d be fine with AAR (numerous reports saying he has no interest here), Schertz (numerous reports saying he has a deal in place with SLU) and Danny Sprinkle (I just see this as a long shot).

Is it Mack or Bucky or we riot?

Where are we at?
