He is coming back next year. This is big news for the team and defensive line - especially for the pass rush. Our interior guys had a good season in that they were effective in stopping the run, which honestly is their most important job. However, we lacked an interior pass rush. Wood is a spark plug in the interior pass rush that we desperately needed this season and will need next year. The positive impact of his return cannot be overstated, and I really like our interior defensive line depth going into next year. You should as well. If he has a prolific year next season, this will cause offenses to slide the protection/double-team him on pass plays and will create more one-on-one pass rush opportunities for the other defensive linemen.
On a higher level, you can never have enough veterans and leadership. Game reps are an invaluable asset, and Wood has plenty. With CJ Taylor's departure, we need veteran leadership for the defense. Leadership translates to off-season workouts, camp, practices, game day, etc. It is an invaluable asset to have, and a good leader can make everyone around them better.
