I have been silently cheering on Bryce Drew's religious evangelical coaching of the private Christian university Grand Canyon, where he is in his element.
(During his brief time at Vanderbilt, Drew had a coaching staff recruited almost entirely from religious schools. He came out of success coaching a Lutheran religious college, Valparaiso, before coaching here briefly.
I did not think that was a great fit at a secular university to try to turn it into a religious-oriented basketball team where everybody had to have the same evangelical Christian faith and there were prayer meetings at "team time" as the regular meetings were called, per a player I talked to from that era.)
Now he is at a private religious college that excels in basketball, and I can't think of a better basketball school that is a religious university than Grand Canyon unless somebody else knows of one.
So I'm hoping he's going to do very well there, and we meanwhile have a coach fitting to us.
Seems like it must be hard to get a berth in the NCAA tourney via the WAC.
Tonight Grand Canyon plays Utah Valley in the WAC tournament championship.
