Referees need to carry the whistle in their hands rather than in their mouths, judge if there were a true physical advantage gained, then decide whether to reach up and blow it. More judgement, less spasmodic anticipatory mindlessness. I'd gladly take late calls over horrible knee jerk reactions any day.
