Filled in for the great @Chris Lee this morning covering Vanderbilt's eighth spring practice which erupted into a scrimmage where the Commodores got in around 76 snaps total. It was a nice mix of the first, second, and third teams going against one another when it came to different situations.

Derek Mason

Trent Sherfield

Here are a few notes and observations from the day:

- Ke'Shawn Vaughn was in attendance for today's scrimmage.
- Kalija Lipscomb started off the scrimmage with two nice catches, one in the middle of the field and the other on a short out-route where he dragged two defenders with him for an additional five yards.
- Jay Hockaday broke through in the backfield and recorded a couple of tackles for loss on the day, the second against Jamuari Wakefield.
- Speaking of Wakefield, he didn't create much in terms of running yards today when he touched the ball but he made a nifty catch on a short out-route from the backfield, jumping up and stretching for a high pass, hauling it in and racing down the sidelines.
- Pinkney made a nice leaping catch down the sideline for about a 25-yard gain from Stankavage.
- Trent Sherfield scored a touchdown on an end-around from about 10 yards out, tight end Nathan Marcus made a nice block on the outside edge to spring Sherfield.
- Jackson Winrow also collected a touchdown pass, turning his body and reaching back for a pass in the middle of the field, then making the defender miss and scoring.
- Deuce Wallace and Shawn Stankavage got a majority of the reps.
- Charles Wright had a huge day on defense - was in on a couple of sacks, had about three tackles for loss by my count. He definitely had a standout day on the defensive end.

Overall, I thought the defense won the day. They created a lot of pressure up front which produced tackles for loss, a handful of sacks, and some tipped passes. Also, the pressure forced some inaccurate throws by Wallace and Stankavage.

On the flip side, the offense made some good plays, Blasingame made some tough runs and Winrow flashed today with his touchdown catch. Pinkney and Lipscomb continue to look impressive and Tennyson made a couple of catches today as well. Receiving corps is making strides.
