I spoke with a potential Commodore’s mother yesterday. The ballplayer lives in the midst of enemy territory. A close relative played ball for one of our biggest rivals. He may have also played in the NFL.

The ballplayer loves Vandy. He’s been to camp at VU and maintains good grades. The mother knows that at any moment her son’s football career could end. She’s looking for more for her son than just football. When the young man isn’t wearing his high school’s gear, he often wears the black and gold.

I don’t know if the young man will be offered a Vandy scholarship—though he’s apparently good enough to play somewhere. The mother’s and the ballplayer’s desires to play for VU is encouraging. As CJF used to say, that VU was for the players from the right families. I think there are an increasing number of these players. We need to get our house in order, however.
