INJURY UPDATE
They came out “relatively healthy”
Daeveon Davis “out indefinitely, still struggling to recover all the way from his knee injury”
Layton Nelson DTD
Agu making progress, DTD for this weekend but did participate some today
Jefff Ugo questionable from ankle sprain, might be able to play
Quincy Skinner “probable” with hamstring
Felt good coming out in terms of health
Happy to start 1-0 and learn from a win
First games after often sloppy games
They were unable to separate
35-14 with the ball and couldn’t close
They had fourth-down attempts twice and couldn’t do it
They talked about focus and doing your job this week
They talked about being able to close games out
Excited to play Alabama A&M
Was unbeaten in the Covid spring
This will be about Vanderbilt football and how it progresses
What happened with the running game and lack of push?
Two issues, most runs had pass options, AJ through experience will get better at that
They like to anticipate pre-snap but also have to anticipate post-snap
When they’re pressuring they have to be detailed about how they set their combinations, they missed some calls and guys sliced through
There were some technical lapses, such as the missed fourth-and-1
Some of the late issues had to do with coordination from the QB position
It’s not big things, it’s little things
Alabama A&M
Multiple fronts, high-tempo offense, non-traditional special teams
They’re adapt their systems to block what they do
At times the linebackers and DL switch pre-snap
They’ll have to be disciplined and detailed
Asked about secondary room
The big one BJ Anderson gave up was fundamental/technical, the WR got vertical on a go-route and BJ has to blunt the release there
Against a good opponent that will cost you; it was 4th-and-4 there
Tyson Russell’s PI, first one he got his hands around WR, the second one could have been argued both ways, he tugged the jersey but released it
On Mahoney’s, it’s hard to cover better, it was a great throw and catch and give credit there
An early throw to the TE was a structural breakdown in that he was uncovered and nobody stayed on the TE, the safety went to the middle of the field to close the post
Riley gave one up, he’s a kid playing his first college game, he was too short on his drop
How much was the inability to get home on time
Sometimes the rush was effective
They got pressure but left escape routes
Hawaii OL did a nice job
They had three sacks and a number of QB pressures
Outtara pressured the ball that Wright picked off at the end
When you shorten the down with no blitzing you can cover better
On rotating on defense but not as much on offense
They want more people to play
They need to be on the same page in terms of what it looks like to earn the right to play
As a program they have to grow that level of trust and not flinch when it’s time to put someone down
He schedules his rotations so he’s not going off how he feels in the moment but what’s scripted
But leaning on someone in the fourth quarter who hasn’t seen the field yet isn’t an answer
The players seemed disappointed, did that translate
That’s a sign of growth
But don’t let those feelings linger too long, they can drag you down
They had a direct meeting yesterday to talk about the game and they felt the same way he did
Everything starts with belief in the room and here belief is a practice
They’re disappointed and discouraged they didn’t play better but plenty of positives to pull from
Even with the weather delay they started fast
Today was a good day, not sure it was a great day on the practice field, he’s still going through the film
As a coach you’re never satisfied
But the team is excited to play and show the level at which they can play
London Humphries
He was one block away on the double reverse
On the fourth down he won the go route
They know he’s talented
He and Junior Sherrill have both flashed, they can both impact their winning
They’re using McGowan a lot but they need time with him not on the field
Credited Richie Hoskins for earning his way into the two-deep and had a nice catch to set up a fourth-and-1
Receiver group had a good camp but needs to be consistent
Does DeRickey Wright make the plays he made Saturday a year ago?
Doesn’t know
Said it’s about having your eyes in the right place
If he can get a player to play with his instincts within the structure they can be good
He has an incredible skill set
He built process into the spring and summer
He saw a player attacking the ball and playing physical
They’re scratching the surface with what he does
He’s 230 and runs a sub-4.5 and there aren’t many of those guys
He’s getting to locations sooner and that’s why he’s making those plays
2-point plays, will that go forward?
They always carry those looks as an option
They’ve not made it a habit but they want to challenge an opponent and give them something to prepare for
Probably won’t become a habit but will have something in the plan to create stress
