I've got background I'm having to sit on for now, but it appears this was a move initiated by the school's communications office for it to take control of all athletics messaging.
It's a move that had been discussed for over a year. So while I guess COVID-19 could theoretically have been used as cost-cutting justification, it seems it had nothing to do with that.
AFAIK, Alan George is the only remaining employee from the former athletics media relations office.
