Sad news.
Loved hearing him call games through the years.
Unfortunately, like other great announcers we know and are near and dear to our hearts, he had a drinking problem.
He lost his job at ESPN after calling a CWS game some 10 or so years ago.
He was drunk on air.
I was keeping score of the game and began to notice that he was announcing the wrong batters … the last batter of the previous inning he said was the first batter of the next inning.
His color guy kept nicely correctly him as we all do with our drunk friends usually.
Actually, IIRC, he was replaced during the game and never heard from again.
