I was thinking about how long a coach should have with a program, and then more deeply what are different philosophies that people on this board would have if they were to rebuild or create what they thought would be a winning program. How long would you want? Where would you recruit and why?
I will name a few areas...you all can add some if I missed out..
1. Offensive Line
2. Defensive line
3. QBs/RBs
4. Receivers
5. Linebackers
6. D-backs
7. Special Teams players (kickers/punters)
I would start with O-line. I am old school (50 years old) and I always believe that if you have the horses up front you can control more aspects of the game (particularly time of possession and keep a defense off the field) I would want 4 years to be able to develop players strength and conditioning wise..
My second area would be skill positions..QB and RB are huge obviously..but with a good O-line you can have a stronger running game and hopefully not put your QB's behind the stakes and force them to make plays
Next D line. Again controlling the line of scrimmage is very important. The more your d-line can do, the more freedom you give the LB's and DB's
I would also look for a top flight PK and punter. Why? yes I need DB's and LB's and receivers...but a great punter can turn field position..and over the course of a game 5 punts could be worth 25-40 yards or more of unseen position. A good PK can get you points.
Just something to think about...
Have fun...or blast away
