Basketball Friday evening coaching update

Notwithstanding the unverified guesses about the lack of interest in Bucky, here is the most likely reason that no major program has apparently shown any interest in him - his total experience at a college/university of any kind (be it as a player, manager, assistant or HC) is limited to Birmingham Southern as a player and Samford as HC for 4 years - that's it, no exposure to any bigger program. He appears to be an outstanding HC, but there is more to being a successful HC at a bigger program than there is at Samford.

Look at some of the other hot names coming up (all of whom also have had recent success at HCs) - Schertz played at Florida Atlantic and has a been very successful HC for 13 years at Lincoln Memorial and now 3 years at Indiana State - apparently not good enough for Louisville, Michigan, OSU, WVU, Vanderbilt and it looks like the best he will be able to do is SLU. Kelsey - he played at Xavier and was an assistant at Wake Forest and Xavier before HC at Winthrop (9 years) and Charleston (3 years) and Vanderbilt may be his best major offer IF he gets one. May - played for Indiana; long time major and mid-major assistant (including 3 years at Florida) and HC at FAU for 6 years (including that F4 run last year) - now that experience puts him in demand for a big job.

Bucky may well be a home run hire for a major program. He also might crash and burn from dealing with the complexities of a bigger program (or a complicated place like Vanderbilt). In all likelihood, he is going to have to move to a bigger mid-major and succeed before he gets a chance at a major job. JMO

Candice Loving Bucky Hater!!!

I don't wish anyone's career to go badly, but i can not live with five years of "why didn't we get Bucky?????" on this board. Query - is he on anyone's list right now?

Bucky is going to be the most commonly used name on here the next four or five years if things go south with our new coach, no doubt

If he beats Bama tomorrow, It would be funny if he does the VU sign with his hands into the camera in the post game interview heading to the sweet 16. 🤣🤣🤣
Bama needs to bring their A game if they hope to advance to the Sweet 16. Should be a great game.

Mitch Henderson 😂😂

All the great coaching in the NCAA Tournament and Henderson is home watching it.
If our job had been open last year he would have looked like a great candidate by that measure.

If that’s the case that is a lack of due diligence on VU’s part. Legal blackjack online gambling 20yrs ago which turned into a few legal blackjack gambling tournaments in Vegas. Other options to make money while being a full-time student, full-time player and full-time coach? Hey if you’re good at something that is lucrative why not pursue it for a couple of years? Funny thing is now DraftKings I think sponsors some features of college athletics these days. Samford is not going to hire someone that isn’t fully vetted.
I don’t know if it’s the gambling, but I know he still enjoys it. It wasn’t just a brief thing.
