Personally, I think the SEC rule regarding fans rushing the court is a joke. The fine(s) are too high and do not "re-set" each year. Additionally, if there is a violation for basketball then a second violation in another sport triggers an additional fine. The SEC is the only conference that does this. While I realize that player safety (mainly the safety of the opposing team) is paramount there HAS to be a better way to accomplish this.
15-20 security guards/ushers cannot hold back 500 students - it is not practical. There is nothing Vanderbilt University could have done better than they did last night and they still will get fined.
A simple solution would be to take those 15-20 ushers and have them immediately surround/encircle the opposing team and usher them off the field/court/whatever. If after doing this the violating school is deemed to have not adequately protected the opposing team then the school gets fined. Let the kids have fun, protect the other team and coaches, and end this BS.
