Last night raised an interesting question, who should be the number 2 scoring option on the basketball team? Based on his size and however long it takes him to work through his thigh injury, Edwards will not be able to carry the team offensively every night.

Here’s who I think are the two most realistic options to be a consistent number 2. McGlockton and Hoggard. There are pros and cons to either being the number 2.

Let’s start with McGlockton:

1. Is the most versatile big on this team. Has excellent shooting touch. Physical around the basket and has shown some explosion.
2. The biggest con I see with McGlockton is that he has to expend so much energy on defense and rebounding due to Vandy’s lack of size that his offense may not be guaranteed every night. Easy buckets will be essential for him in transition if he is going to be the No. 2.
3. That said, he is arguably the most well-rounded player in terms of size and skill on the team and he is a grinder.

Now, let’s get to Hoggard:

1. Hoggard has been Vandy’s most consistent offensive player through 2 conference games.
2. However, AJ’s play has been up and down all season and some nights it’s unclear what you will get from him.
3. AJ is a solid finisher around the rim. This is an element of offense that Vandy needs especially on nights when threes aren’t falling.
4. Hoggard is not a great outside shooter but has excellent size for a guard. He has the ability to post up or out physical smaller defenders.

My take: Right now, let AJ be the second option. He’s the more experienced player, has exposure to loud road environments, and has shown flashes of being able to take over games. So long as he continues to facilitate and takes good shots, it should not disrupt the offense.

What do you guys think?
