I did not really enjoy last night's game all that much. To me, it seemed like it only barely resembled basketball at times. It seemed like a combination of some basketball and a lot of sumo wrestling. Now, I will admit that I enjoy basketball that is played with skill, speed, quickness and finesse. Strength and endurance are certainly important as well. But not just brute strength. Backing in on a defender with each player bumping each other harder and harder until the offensive player can create enough separation for a fall-away jumper-well I don't appreciate that style of play. And I don't mean this as a criticism of either team but rather the style of play we sometimes see in college basketball. The shame of it is that at times both teams ran some good half court sets against a solid defense and showed the ability to run at times as well. This overly physical play also makes the game nearly impossible to officiate as we witnessed last night. Several years ago, it became a "point of emphasis" to try to clean up the game some and I think they did, but it seems to have gone back to a more physical game. Quite a few years ago, the NHL decided to crack down on holding, hooking, slashing, etc. in order to allow the skilled players to display their skills and take over the game. And it worked. It's time for college basketball to do the same thing.
