...his passes are soft and easy to catch. Gerald Robinson, the long time pro, was the best guard on the court last night of the four teams. He had all the moves, the strength and the experience to control the game for his team. But some of his passes sailed right past the targets because he'd fling them so hard that the guys weren't always ready to grab them. He almost broke one dude's neck. His teammates had to have their heads on swivels. Garland does all of the aggressive physical work in setting up the pass, then softly lofts the ball on a lob or places just the right speed on a cross-court pass. He moves the defense with his body action, then fools them with his eyes, then, BOOM, a dude's got an open dunk. It' a subtle thing, but probably the most important aspect of passing: make sure the target catches the ball.
