After Beamers comments about the rooster, he just continues to look like a clown.

I don't like him. I don't like "Reverend" Hugh Freeze, and I don't like the fat trash man, Josh Heupel.

But, who do I like the least?

Tough call.

Pavia named Maxwell semifinalist (press release)

Pavia Named Maxwell Semifinalist

Quarterback Diego Pavia one of 16 up for national player of the year

Online: https://vucommodores.com/pavia-named-maxwell-semifinalist/

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia has been named one of 16 semifinalists for the 88th Annual Maxwell Award.

Presented by the Maxwell Football Club, the award is presented annually to the collegiate player of the year.

Pavia has led Vanderbilt to a 6-4 mark on the season, reaching bowl eligibility for the first time since 2018. Along the way, Pavia has engineered wins over Virginia Tech, No. 1 Alabama, Kentucky and Auburn.

The graduate student has completed 60.6 percent of his passes this season for 1,843 yards and 15 touchdowns. With his legs, Pavia has 628 rushing yards and five scores. He leads SEC quarterbacks in rushing yards and ranks eighth among all SEC players. He’s fifth in the SEC with a pass efficiency rating of 148.45.

Per Pro Football Focus, his 24 rushes of at least 10 yards are the most by a Power 4 quarterback this season. In addition, his 568 yards after contact lead Power 4 quarterbacks and ranks second among all FBS signal-callers.

His most impressive performance of the season came against then-No. 1 Alabama, when he led the Dores to their first win over a No. 1 team in school history. He was named the Maxwell and Davey O’Brien Player of the Week, as well as SEC Offensive Player of the Week. He was 16-for-20 for 252 yards and two touchdowns, posting the best completion percentage against the Crimson Tide since 2010.

Pavia is the fourth quarterback since 2004 to earn wins over Alabama and Auburn in the same season without playing in the SEC East, joining Stetson Bennett, Deshaun Watson and Matthew Stafford. He is just the eighth quarterback since 2004 to earn at least three combined wins over the Tide and Tigers during their career.

Pavia and the Commodores return to action on Nov. 23 at LSU.

Diego and a couple of other thoughts

1. I was as impressed with the play of Pavia as ever. May be even more than ever. What a player. What a competitor. Pass blocking protection? Next to none. Run game existence? Next to none. But yet, with the help of solid play from his receivers, look what this guy did. While this was not a great performance by the offense overall and it was not very exciting, the play of Diego Pavia was well worth the price of admission.
2. The play of the defense was solid. The defensive line was overmatched, got no pass rush. Considering the lack of offensive production, I thought the defense did as well as could be expected. Maybe even better than that.
3. Offensive line struggled in both pass protection and run blocking. Unless this improves, the offense will obviously have problems.
4. I felt like it was a game of missed opportunities for 3 quarters. It seemed like we had chances to get some momentum going but we just could not do it.
5. Biggest problem: on offense, it has become strictly a one man show. Yes, the offense has always depended on Pavia but now it has become totally dependent on Diego to make a play, to make it go. I like our receivers and feel like they are capable and more so. But Diego cannot take on the job of making offense work by himself.

SEMO

I didn't get to watch the game, but, it sounds like it was closer than it should've been.

Imo, that's not a big deal, in and of itself. We just played the worst team in the country, SEMO just played a decent team. Makes sense they were a little more game ready. It's not the end of the world. I like learning from wins. We probably lose this game under Stack.

We are also still learning each other, from the coaches, players, and schemes.

The concerning part to me, is that the trend of other teams coming into Memorial and continue to hit wide open 3's at a pretty good percentage, while we, the home team, can't seem to make a uncontested, wide open three to save our lives, regardless of who the coach is.

Why is this?

Vandy WBB receives AP Top 25 votes

Vanderbilt received 13 votes in the AP Top 25 Poll. This puts the Commodores at No. 32 in the country.

7-5

Well that sucked

Really I’m not that mad about it. We are beat up, they played really well and have far superior athletes at many (most) key positions, and conditions were terrible. We get a bye to heal up before the final two

I called 7-5 before the season started and I’m not backing off it now (though I had several of the Ws and Ls reversed)

Assuming Pavia can use the bye week to get back to 80% or so, I believe we will win at least one of the remaining two.

Games like this help illustrate where we most need help in the Portal going forward.

Low content: So whiny

I don't want to spend too much time thinking about him, but the 3 minutes I watched of Shane Beamer's postgame presser was really low class. He was unhappy that Vanderbilt didn't let Carolina's mascot gamecock into the stadium, which in his book is a huge abomination by Vanderbilt against SEC culture. Why LSU even had a live tiger at their game, and VU wouldn't let them bring a harmless gamecock!

The LSU point is stupid. The university doesn't want their mascot at games. Since 2015 the university doesn't allow their mascot at games. The governor pulled a publicity stunt by hiring a different tiger, belonging to someone with an alleged track record of poor treatment including at least one escape. So yeah, his example of a mascot isn't even a ****ing mascot!

Beyond that -- I don't know much about gamecocks. (Searches pull up a lot about peacocks.) Roosters don't fly far, but it's pretty easy to imagine you don't want to risk having a "precious" animal flying around a live construction site. Or at all, really. Does coach Pissypants take his pets to other people's homes uninvited?

And finally -- SC played a great game. They should be proud of their performance. What kind of disrespect is it to your own team to lead the press conference whining about not taking your mascot to a road game? Show some class, take the W, and bask in all the acclaim your team is getting.

MBB: Billy Donovan

Recent news surfacing in Gainesville about the head coach of the MBB team prompted me to look up Billy Donovan’s NBA record. He took OKC to the conference finals in his first year. Since then, with two teams, he has lost in the first round of the playoffs in five of the past eight seasons. He missed the playoffs in the other three. Does he ever return to college coaching?

Cubelic’s take on our effort against SCe

“VANDERBILT: Tough one. Bad matchup. Could not get north/south run going. That let LBs have freedom. Teams going to try & make them a pocket passing team. QB made them pay with runs. Couldn't get shots down the field. Tough to move the pocket on those edge players. OL not great 1 on 1 in pass pro. Defense did a nice job attacking the football. Forced incompletions& got the ball out a few times. 10 & 20 both really good off the ball. Missed a few tackles on perimeter. 4 had some nice wins. RPO game hurt some. Pop passes also. Gave up ground on combos. 29 good pass rush. Scramble drill a problem. Secondary had a few missed tackles. Did'nt win 3rd down. Didn't get their style fight.”

Update on Marlon Jones

Clark Lea on Marlon Jones:

“While we are excited for Marlon Jones to join our program, he will remain at home this fall while dealing with a personal health issue. Marlon is a part of our brotherhood and he will continue to be in our thoughts while we support him from Nashville. We look forward to welcoming him to campus in January.”

Army's Path to the Playoffs -- Am I missing something?

Army's remaining games are:

Notre Dame at Yankee Stadium
UTSA at West Point

And if they qualify they would appear in the AAC Championship on Friday, December 6.
All of which would be in time for the College Playoff Selection Show on December 8.

But, it also appears that the Army-Navy game is December 14.

So if I am reading this right Army might get a bid to the playoff and then proceed to lose to Navy the next week. Is that right?

First round games of the playoffs, by the way, are slated for December 20 and 21.
