Tony Kemp

Tony with a nice response here. Some may not know that Joe Kelly is the son of former Vandy WR Joe Kelly. Tony is such a great representative of Vanderbilt. I hope he is employed here in some capacity some day.

I will be at the game. Excited to see the turnout. I know several wake friends attending. Curious what the percentages will be. Good news for VU the colors are the same. I think it at best 50/50. Possibly 60/40 Wake.
1. They have some serious momentum around the team. And Nashville is an easy to reach location.
2. I still think vu casual fans are in wait and see mode.

Paraphrasing Clark Lea's postgame comments

On the turnovers
They prepared to not do that and give Wake extra possessions.
They started fast on defense and played competitively in all three phases early
It was unfortunate they had clarity on what it took and couldn’t execute
They had the spirit and energy but they lacked the discipline and it caught up to them

On benching Wright
They weren’t getting anything going on offense, it was 35-10
They’d just had a three-and-out and a turnover and AJ is next man up
He wants to see film before commenting on AJ

How did Mike react to the benching, they seemed to be having a conversation
Mike is a first-class act and he wanted to support him in that moment and make sure Mike was locked in to helping the team there
It’s frustrating and disappointing but Mike will bounce back
“Today was an indicator of where we are.”
They played a sloppy first half that allowed Wake some distance

Asked about naming a starting QB before fall camp to ward off uncertainty
Mike’s still their starter, he’s a gifted player and playmaker
Getting AJ out there was what the team needed today

Building off this?
The first two games showed flashes of good things
They also showed lack of competitive maturity
They exposed themselves to counterpunches (presumably last week)
It’s about understanding what they just experienced and there will be some positives from which to learn
They don’t like the result
They’ll focus on what today showed them

Tough day for the secondary, what did he see
They wanted to defend the entire field and didn’t; it’s not all on the secondary
They’ve got to give their guys chances to peel off hitches and tackle and play physically
They didn’t tackle physically today
They’ve got tp put their guys n better positions for success
They didn’t want explosive plays to go for TDs and that happened on the post route in the first half

(Didn’t hear the question)
They’re frustrated, the players are frustrated
It’s the moments they don’t do all they can do to impact an outcome and that’s hard to swallow
He’s frustrated
He has ownership of what happened today too

What’s it like convincing their players to take ownership?
For anyone it’s a challenge
He’s got a special group of guys in the locker room; they’re energized to get things pointed in the right direction
They’re 2-1 and had a disappointing game today
They don’t talk about ownership as a response to something that didn’t go well, it’s part of the conversation every day

Was the defense well prepared for the slow mesh?
They showed early they could go toe to toe and then the explosive TD hurt
On the whole they battled
They have to finish cleaner late against the run
The Wake OL got too much push
Energy and spirt was there early

On the punts not being high and long
They held off on rugby kicks in the past
Wake had a good returner and they wanted to make it hard on him
On the whole, they did a good job of forcing fair catches and putting it where he wasn’t
They got a turnover on the one that was mis-handled

Football Paraphrasing Mahoney/Schoenwald postgame comments

MAHONEY

How’d they handle the scheme?
It wasn’t good enough

They checked all three of their keys

They allowed explosive plays

Sometimes they won in the war zone and sometimes they didn’t

At the end of the day it wasn’t good enough

On the flurry of three TDs Wake had early

He can’t say it’s deflating because they have control of that, they have to stay in the middle and not get emotional in that spot

GAVIN

What made it tough to get on track offensively?
It’s about rhythm, they couldn’t find it

Otherwise he can’t give an answer until he sees more film but Wake did a good job of shutting down outside runs

On AJ/Mike
Mike’s the heartbeat of the program

Seven days ago people were talking about Mike being one of the best players in college football

Turnovers

You kick yourself every time that happens

That was their No. 1 offensive key and they failed to take care of the ball

They’ve got to be better next week

What’s the challenge of getting better?
They’re constantly evolving and getting better

But they’re 2-1 and have a chance to win on the road next week

They are really looking forward to next week

Was the rain a factor?

You never want to use it as an excuse

It’s a factor and they handled it poorly

It doesn’t rain for two months and then it rains back-to-back home games
