Locked in as #6 Seed, will play winner of LSU vs. Georgia

Alabama on opposite side of bracket which is the only team I can't see any scenario of us beating. If we can win tonight and win 2 in tournament, things get very interesting next Sunday.

If we win our first game, we play 3 seed UK, and we already know we can beat them.

This was the better option than the 5 seed, IMO. Gotta win tonight, tho.

We may need to add Seton Hall to the bubble watch

Just blew out Providence. Unbelievably similar résumé to Vanderbilt.

Another streak ends in hoops!

No one has mentioned it yet, mainly because it doesn't matter until next season, but we finally didn't finish in the bottom four in the SEC standings.

That means next year, we get to play in the new SEC/ACC challenge. We missed out on the last 4 or 5 SEC/BIG12 challenges, and this year was the last one.

Mississippi State Game - The Game

Not a lot of focus on the board about tomorrow's game from an "X's" and "O's" perspective . . . .

First, before getting to the numbers, I worry about the team's emotion following the extreme high from two nights ago (although Stackhouse has shown over the last 8 games a pretty good ability to know which buttons to push) and our ability to adapt without Liam being on the floor (see 1-3 earlier in the season) (I discount, to some extent, the KY game because we were likely running on in-game adrenalin.).

I start with Tolu Smith and almost end with Tolu Smith, unless someone comes out of the woodwork to put a one game "season's best" performance tomorrow evening. Smith has . . .

  • led his team in scoring 17 times . . . 15.8 per game;
  • is the only player averaging in double figures;
  • has led his team in rebounding in all but 11 games . . . 8.2 per game;
  • takes over 1/3 of his team's free throws, although connects at a 56.9% clip;
  • is #1 in FG % in the SEC . . . 58.6%;
  • leads his team in blocks . . . 0.7 per game; and
  • commits a little over 2 turnovers per game.
Most of the other players exhibit high-end athleticism which complements fairly good basketball skills, although the latter does not include shooting from distance. The team . . .

  • shoots 27.4% from "3";
  • connects at a 64.8% from the line;
  • has a FG % of 42.7%;
  • leads the SEC in steals;
  • are 5th in assists; and
  • are 13th in scoring.
They have beaten Marquette and TCU (without Mike Miles) out of conference; they beat MO, AR and aTm in conference (and lost close to AL, UK and MO).

MSU's coach is all about defense and that shows both as a positive and as a negative.

What say you?

Off topic Big 12 Expansion

Next year the Big 12 will add Houston, Cincinnati, Central Florida and BYU which, with the first 2 schools, will strengthen an already strong basketball conference, and the conference leaders are in discussions with AZ, ASU, Utah, and CO about joining, and now it has been reported that they are having serious discussions with Gonzaga. This addition would absolutely make it the best basketball conference and a real meat-grinder of a schedule, much like the SEC in baseball.

Myles Stute

Myles is a potent offensive weapon when he's on his game. But I did some digging and it appears his 3pt accuracy has fallen off a cliff starting with the 189-pt Alabama loss. Prior to that game, Stute was 56-127, 44.1% from 3. Since that game, during which the team has gone 7-1, Stute has shot 12-53 from 3pt range, 22.6%. I'm not sure if it's a physical injury or he's pressing too much, but we need him to get back to being 40%+ 3pt shooter to make some noise this month.
