This upcoming basketball season

@VandyFan_23 had a good thought at looking at how things stack up in the SEC for next year. I had looked around at all the rosters a couple of weeks ago, and I have some general thoughts and team specific thoughts on how things will work out.

General: The SEC will be stacked with good teams again next year with a lot of tournament caliber teams once again. However, I don’t think there will be an Alabama type elite team like last year. I think we showed we can beat almost anyone last year, and that will help us tremendously this year. I’ll address the teams in groups of who made the tourney vs NIT vs who didn’t with some brief thoughts on each

Alabama: They return good players like Mark Sears and Jahvon Quinerly, but lose many important players, especially Noah Clowney, Charles Bediako, and the big one Brandon Miller. Will they make the tournament again, probably. But they won’t be a 1 seed

Arky: Last year the 5 stars carried the load, but this years team will be more about the experienced transfers they brought in. They also bring in a couple lower end 5 stars that could contribute, plus return guys like Devo Davis and Malik Mitchell. The biggest thing will be getting Trevon Brazile back from injury. While there’s a lot of turnover, there’s much more depth and experience on this team, and I think they’ll get back to form whereas last year they were closer to the bubble

Auburn: They lose Wendell Green and Allen Flanigan from a decent team last year, but bring in a 5 star point guard and good tranfer to replace them. Keeping Johni Broome was the biggest win of the offseason for them. I don’t think they’ll be an elite team but they should be at least as good as this past year

Kentucky: Right now they’re basically trying to rely on only freshman to make an impact and don’t even have a full roster. All of the important guys from last year are already gone, and the one that’s in flux is Antonio Reeves who’s taking summer classes elsewhere right now. This UK team looks primed to miss the tournament while trying a beat a bunch of experienced teams with freshmen

Mississippi State: They were the last SEC team into the field last year and look poised to improve upon that. The return every key piece from last years teams plus add some shooters, including a top flight transfer.

Missouri: I think Dennis Gates is a good coach, and they have a bunch of the underrated transfer types coming in yet again, but this years team doesn’t return a player like Kobe Brown. They also lose Hodge and Gholston who were there other top players. I think this team is clearly worse than last year and has a there’s a solid chance they won’t make the tournament

Tennessee: They lost Phillips and Olivier, and Ziegler will still be recovering from his injury in some capacity, but they return Vescovi and JJJ for their 87th years, plus bring in a few good transfers. I’m predicting a crazy outcome of another good regular season combined with another early exit in the tournament.

Texas A&M: I think they were a 7 seed overall but they were the 2nd best team in the SEC and have a good shot at the overall crown this year. They return basically every relevant piece outside of Dexter Dennis and are definitely a safe bet to be a top team in the SEC and the country. Their guard duo of Boots Radford and Wade Taylor is as good as ours and helps them be able to match up against anyone.

NIT teams
Florida: We’ve talked plenty about ourselves on the board, so I’ll only mentions the only other NIT team from the SEC which is UF. I think they’re the only team besides us that didn’t make the tournament last year that might this year. They lose Castelton but bring back a potential stud in Riley Kugel plus have Will Richard who has lots of talent. They also brought in one of the best portal hauls in the country that gives them a good guards and bigs to fit around those two wings

Non postseason teams: I think some of these teams definitely improved, but none of them look ready to truly compete yet. It’s not a coincidence that all of these teams are in year 1 or 2 of their coach’s tenure.

Georgia: They were decent last year, and look to improve this year. They lose a lot and bring on a lot. No one really stands out on their roster right now, but I think Mike White is doing the right things in terms of trying to flip the roster and build a solid foundation on the roster. They’re improving the talent with some transfers and some 4 star high schoolers, but they need some real dudes to compete with the better teams

LSU: They will definitely not be the joke that they were this last season but they are far from competing with the whole league. Matt McMahon had to scramble to fill the roster last year, and unfortunately for him there’s not much from last year to build upon with KJ Williams departing. Jordan Wright, Will Baker, Jalen Cook, and Damion Collins is an intriguing group that might be enough to keep them from sucking, but I also don’t see a real core that you can build on developing here

Ole Miss: Probably the most interesting team in the SEC. They were awful last year but bring in one of the better coaches in the country in Chris Beard, return a very good player in Matt Murrell, and bring in a lot of highly rated transfer. On paper they look like they could take a huge jump. Something problematic is 2 of those players aren’t supposed to be eligible for next year. If they aren’t, Ole Miss is likely a team that’s just less bad instead of actually any good

South Carolina: This is just a really hard program to win anything at. They lose GG Jackson, Hayden Brown, Chico Carter. They keep Meechie Johnson and bring in some decent transfers but no one game changing. I think they’re a little more talented than last year’s team, but they’re still a bottom tier team

All around I’d say things are set up well for Vanderbilt next year. The teams that were below us don’t look like they’re going anywhere any time soon, and some of the teams above are showing signs of weakness. This is definitely another year where as long as you have a good non-con records going .500 in conference will get you in. Hopefully we can get it done

Looking forward to this football season

We saw huge progress this past season. We beat a ranked UK on the road and Florida, both of which had 1st round QB talents. We didnt get wrecked by transfers, and we have and still are recruiting really well. I remember with Mason how it never felt like we were getting better those last couple of seasons. We have NFL talent at QB and WR. The schedule sets up for a nice run to start the year, and 6-0 is not outside the realm of the possible. Granted 0-6 to close the year would be the most Vanderbilt thing ever. 4-0 and 5-0 starts always ended with 5-7, 6-6. The good news is this year we wont lose interest in the team by September 15. Im planning on going to as many games as possible and enjoying a good team for once.

Any chance we go after these guys. According to his bio, Danny Corona chose Wake over us. Could be a power hitting 1B??

John Williamson story The Athletic

One of a multi part series on “offbeat” sports
Best quote:
“When they hired me (my dad) was floored,” John Williamson said. “You’re sitting at this table (for coaches meetings) and you’re like, ‘There’s Bobby Johnson. There’s Kevin Stallings.’ These are all these big-time coaches.

“And then there’s me.”

mbb season and transfers

Am I alone in my thinking or is there anyone else who understands where I am coming from? I will be in Memorial every game cheering for Vandy. I don't keep up with transfers, etc. so I depend on this board for that information. And, if that information is accurate, it seems we have a chance to win a bunch of games when you add the transfers to the returning players. But, for me, it won't be as much fun as I had watching many of Stallings' teams or Fogler's teams. At least not early on. Because those other teams were mostly "my" players. I watched them for several seasons and got to know them, even the few transfers were here for more than a year. Over the course of this season, I'll get to know the new players but it won't be quite the same. I know the "old days" are gone and the portal and buying players is where it stands now. Not just basketball but all sports. I do want Vanderbilt to be a player in this new era because I want to have competitive, winning teams. But I have to wonder what the future holds for college athletics.

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound prospect out of Monroe, LA. sat down with VandySportsDotCom to go in-depth on his experience in Nashville over the weekend, revealing his interest in the Commodores.

Prior to his visit this past weekend, Hamby began hearing from the Commodores this past March, collecting an SEC offer from Vanderbilt in early April. Hamby said that it was a dream come true and that the program had been involved for the last two weeks.

Hamby said that his recent visit was amazing and that all the coaches and players have bought into the program and believe in the program, which stood out to him.

"It was amazing," Hamby said. "The coaches and players are all in and believe in the program, and I love that."

Prior to his visit, Hamby connected with Vanderbilt head coach Clark Lea, defensive coordinator Nick Howell and defensive analyst Jimmy Thompson.

Hamby said that during his visit, he connected most with both Coach Howell and Coach Thompson, adding that the coaches are good at what they do and have love for the game.

"Coach Thompson and Coach Howell are really amazing in what they do," Hamby said. "Also, I like their love for the game."
